Honeymoon in italy

I'm heading to Italy for my honeymoon. Starting in lake guarda, Florence, Rome and sicily. We're planning to spend a few days in each place.
I see loads of tours available online (beat the queues for the vatican / florence museums). Is it worth pre-booking these tickets before we head or is it cheaper / better to arrive early on the chosen days?
Any suggestions of what we should / shouldn't miss?

What time of year are you going?

The only types of tours I would be looking to book ahead of time are wine / cycling tours around Tuscany (for when you are in Florence).

I think you can pre-book tickets directly with the museums. The Academia and Uffizi in Florence are well worth a look.

What days will you be in Rome? Vatican likely has bigger crowds on Weds (I think) as this is the day the Pope gives an official mass. You can book tickets for this directly with the Vatican if you wish.

For the Vatican itself, don't think you can pre-book tickets. Best bet is to head there early in the morning to beat the crowds - it can be a long tour but the real thing to see there is the Sistine chapel. It's a long walk from where you enter the Basilica. Santa Maria Maggiore is another fantastic cathedral you should definitely have a look at.

Don't bother with the tours of the Coliseum, should be ok to just stroll up and get a ticket. Queues aren't particularly bad.

Have a look on Trip Advisors for the type of "tours" you can do. But for the stationary "honey-pot" attractions, best bet is to book directly.

    We're heading early June.
I had seen http://www.myvaticantour.com/?gclid=CNz8urXSx7YCFYg82wodGWkAlA and thought it was good for the Vatican. But someone told me it would be better to just arrive early on the day and join a short queue. It would be cheaper and we could stay as long as we wanted in each place. Don't know how true that is.
Because of this i was wondering would the same apply to the other areas i.e. the coliseum and Florence museums.
Thanks for the tip on the wine tasting tour.

I would tend to agree with whoever told you that as a general rule of thumb. All you need to do is read up on it before you go and maybe take a little guide book or even a smart phone where at lot of these places could have apps specific to them.

Comes down to personal preference but IMO, these guides are very much over-rated and rush you along. Much prefer to see these things at my own pace. Plus your plans might change on the day. If you don't book these things then you are not fully committed to it.
