I heard that you can maximise training effort by holding your breath for as long as possible during training runs. Is this true?

Only if your goal is to pass out.

I think he is running not diving

Actually, I sometimes (for short periods) close my eyes when running. Maybe you should try both at the same time and report back;)

He can't possibly be. Have you ever tried holding your breath while running? Must be a diver.

Joking aside, apparently changing the way you breath is supposed to help. Scott Jurek talked about changing his breath in training. Basically breathing only through his nose during easy runs. Apparently one of the most important things an ultra runner can do is breath abdominally.

interesting. i find that breathing through my nose only when easy running helps keep my heart rate low.

Yes ultra running sounds good. Could that help becoming an ultra MMA fighter?

Absolutely. As long as you intend to run around in circles for hours.

Please do some research first on what a ultra run is.

Perhaps ask this question in the MMA forum then?

    http://www.trainingmask.com/products/TRAINING-MASK-2.0.html

Apparently these things are pretty popular among MMA fighters. I think the idea is that it puts extra stress on your breathing simulating the effect felt when training at attitude.

I wonder would there be any benefit for a runner to wear one of these while training? Aside of course from the obvious benefit of making you look like Bane out for a run

All he needs now is to hit the weight room :p

(To OP: he wore this due to pollen count rather than breathing exercise)

    Very true

I think many who do MMA usually approach it from a HIIT or cross fit training perspective to work on explosive power and all round fitness rather than run specific low intensity aerobic fitness.

I hear that mask helps cure training induced thyroid deficiencies as well ;)

Is a spastic colon a likely result of this form of training ?
