The Role of a GAA Club PRO

I was appointed PRO of my GAA Club at the last AGM. I update the Club Website, FB and Twitter. I often will get in touch with the managers and coaches of the various teams to obtain details of games played as I can't attend many myself. I try to get to some games and spent a few hours at last week's Félie weekend taking photos at the club grounds.

Am I avoiding some of my responsibilties by not getting to more games? and is it reasonable to be asking the managers or coaches for details? Many of them haven't ever had to supply details to a PRO before this, so they are a little aloof when I contact them. Am I being paranoid. Feedback is generally good from the work I do online and for papers.

Get all the managers of the relevant teams to add you into their text outs for games so you'll know what's happening regarding matches. Its entirely reasonable to ask the lads to supply some information as you can't be expected to attend every game.

Try and get something from all age groups and genders. Its also very important to make yourself known to the sports editors of the local papers as you'll find if they know you its easier to get your pics, notes and reports into the media.

Always bring a camera and get into the habit of sending in a shot or two to the papers with your usual notes. I've been doing it a couple of years now and find it gets easier to get stuff in as time goes by.

    Good luck with it

    take a step back

send out a text once a week to all managers/officials asking for material for club notes. or get a parent on each underage team to submit a match report. also get them to email photos.
if they reply then great, if not then its hardly your fault?

it shouldn't be your job to go to every game

Thanks for the replies. The reason I asked, is that one of the lads supplied me a full report, with teams names and scorers, last night. Took me by surprise. At the same time I was a small bit disappointed that I didn't have to chase it. I'm never happy!!!

One is tempted to advise not to do too much. When it comes to the time when you want to get out, they'll find it very hard to replace you, thus great pressure will be brought to bear on you to continue.

I was club PRO for a couple of years. Pretty much responsible for website, sending in club notes to papers etc. It was always the responsibility of the managers or a parent to send me the details/match reports etc. I was playing both foorball and hurling with the cliub at the time and had little time left over to go to underage matches.

Generally I found some managers were really good at it and sent in photos match reports etc, othere were not that interested in it so for some of the teams it was a parent that would send in photos etc.

At the end of the day it is impossible to attend all the games/functions that happen in the club every week.

I’d agree with that. I did it for a few years before moving on the secretary and chairperson. It seems to be you’re doing a good job. Your managers need to help you out also. Check out the club roles on the GAA website.
