I have an old trailer and the bearings are starting to get very bad. I have no idea what the axle is off I am guessing a 30 year old car or similar. A friend said if I remove one of the bearings I should be able to get a code off it and then find out which car it is off. Is there a standard bearing puller I can buy for not huge money and give it a go ? Do all bearings go in and come out in a similar way ? Where should I buy the tool and which size, brand etc

Usually they are tapered rollers on older stuff, These can come off with a 3 jaw puller if you can get purchase on the back of the bearing.
Or if there is nothing to grip then the twin ramp type can be used or the internal 3 jaw ones that grip the race.
Hard to know what you need without seeing the bearing.

How much should I expect to pay for them ? I will try the 3 jaw puller to start with. Thanks for the advice very appreciated. Should it be handy enough to match up bearings ? Using the codes/ numbers etc

When you have them off bring them to some place that does agri or commercial spares or specialize in bearings. They will measure them and as long as they are standard there should be no problem. Bring the seal as well as you will need to replace that.

If the axle is that old and assuming that it hasn't beed cut about too much, take a few pictures and throw it up on the classic car forum. Somebody there will probably identify the car (and some maybe the colour and what the original owner had for breakfast!)

Have you examined the axle casing for markings and numbers? That may help ID the doner for the axle.

As above, dicksons bearings, just off m50 @ finglas exit.
