    time to change my van thinking of buying a 08/09 260 swb transit 6 speed
    110/130bhp any thoughts

    I was in the transit vs primastar debate myself and after talking to owners I wont be getting one.

    Actually was looking to buy a 08 transit 280 myself but hear lots of bad stories but then again whats the best van to buy as they all seem to give their fair share of trouble

    A Hiace is the answer to your question in my experience :) They are about as reliable as vans get imo.

    probably the hiace would be the hardest on diesel, i had a 07 d4d and they are hard on it

    Probably the worst SWB van on fuel you can buy. In saying all that transits aren't exactly easy on fuel. When my dad first set up his construction company the first van he ever bought was a hiace about 5 years old at the time. He hated it counted down the days until he could get rid of it. Reliable yes but that's about the only thing it has going for it. He bought a new vavaro then and it was a way nicer van in every possible way. He then had a serious amount of renaults the whole range at one stage kangoos traffics masters megane van they all proved very reliable vans we still have a 06 master with 200k km. bought jan 06 by us so far all that has gone wrong is one wheel bearing and that's the truth. So hiaces aren't the only thing that are reliable. The one thing I will say is renaults won't take abuse as well as toyotas so they are not the best van to buy second hand unless you find a really clean one.

    my d4d is not easy on it

    also gearboxes tend to give some trouble on them

    The non d4d is ever so slightly better on fuel but it's minimal really. The none D4d is also a much smoother engine than the d4d but isn't as lively to drive.

    As for gearbox issues, they are few and far between, it would take some serious neglect for a gearbox to go in one of these, regularly changing the gearbox oil should prevent any problems.

    hi, just heard a few problems with the bearings in the older models 99/2000 where it would hum in some of the gears, but probably a different and better box in the d4d models,
    no problems with mine yet anyway

    What would you get out of yours mpg wise I'm just curious my dad had one years ago and it was terrible on fuel are the d4ds better.

    probably around the 28-30mpg id say but do have alot of tools in the back

    We'd get 30-32 mpg out of a high roof lwb Renault master which would be a lot bigger. Still 30mpg isn't to bad for a hiace and the tools in the back add a good bit of weight. The older type hiace we had I think it was 00 it was only doing 25mpg. I suppose realistically early 30s is all you can hope to get out of most vans.
