Window shild / mesh - to stop smashing/break-ins

    Hi folks,

I'm looking for hints, tips, suggestions, info and reccommended companies for window security.

My friends granny has been having her top floor windows smashed in on a weekly basis for quite some time now. Her daughter has moved in since it's happened as she's petrified.

This evening the house was 'attacked', and every window at the back of the house was broken.

What I'm looking for is a recommended solution for the windows. Generally medium sized rocks are thrown at it (not small stones) and with enough force to break double glazing, so the solution would need to be able to withstand such force.

What would you guys suggest? I was thinking of a window grill (such this or similar) and then running some wire mesh over that.

Or is there a special hard/security glass one can buy? If so any suggestions on make/manufacturer/company/fitter etc?

    Any help greatly appreciated!

I suggest getting the gards involved. Or get granny out of that environment.

I would recommend a shotgun for the scumbags. It a disgrace that some one can be terrorised in their own homes. As said call the cops in fact id hound em about it. Putting a mesh/grill over windows will make the house feel like being in jail and thats not how some one should feel in their own home. There is a different class of scum in this country nowadays.

Also, the crime won't just stop because there is a grill/mesh on the windows. If they can't break windows, what will they do next ? Burn the house down ??

You say this as if they haven't thought of this?

The cops are well aware. Calls are made on a monthly, and sometimes weekly, basis to both the local garda station & the community garda. Nothing has changed, and her moving residence is unfortunately not an option at the moment.

So with that in mind, can I get some other genuine suggestions please?

Security film won't stop the window being broken but will prevent it from smashing to pieces. Possibly not your best bet. On the other hand, 5mm or 10mm clear polycarbonate is used on a lot of public areas to prevent thugs smashing light boxes etc. for both solutions, call vision gfp 01 4500622. Ask for Maura or Keith. Depending on the size of your window, you will need this cut to size. Is it possible then for you to screw fix this to the window frame? You can get these with drill holes provided so you can screw fix. Just be sure to figure out the size of you window frames to allow for fixing. If you need any more help (about the polycarbonate) then pm me

Alternatively, if the windows are Double glazed replace the D/G Units with 25mm Polycarbonate.
You will need a glazier to measure each unit, cut the Poly to size and put into the windows.

O.K they wont be able to see out, light will be alright, but the Poly will stand up to the attack.

25mm is overkill IMO. 10mm will work, will be cheaper, and you be able to see out

Yes, but you recommend screwing it to the outside of the frame,

I suggest replacing the D/G unit with poly, the standard D/G unit is 24/28mm so the 25mm Poly will go into the frame, replacing the glass.

More expensive, Yes,but a better solution in my opinion.
