    The immortal words...
"...If its not broken dont fix it" spring to mind.
After all that nonsense from SIMI they still could not get it right!!

What do green plates stand for?

One is green and one isn't though, I don't think anyone will be mistaking the trade plate for the standard plate.

I do think that the 131/2 plate thing is utter nonsense though.

a camera could make that mistake though, I doubt they are set up to recognise green plates

Green plates are Trade/Garage Plates. Used by garages/dealers for moving/test driving untaxed vehicles on public roads.

From 1993 to c.1999 Trade Plates started at '1' each year. However this led to duplication with standard plates, e.g. in 1995 a Trade Plate = '90-WW-95', Standard Plate = '90-WW-95'. For this reason all trade plates from c.1999 started at '101' each year.

It now appears that we are back to the 1993 situation with the duplication of plates. i.e. every county currently has a '131'-county-13' trade plate and standard plate in circulation. This will continue when '132', '141', '142' etc etc etc plates are released.

It shows how little thought goes into our plate system by the powers-that-be. (other examples are historically-incorrect seven-digit 'ZV' plates (i.e. ZV-nnnnn) and unsealed/non-tamperproof ZZ temporary plates).

What are we supposed to see on that MyWheels link?

That the reg number is currently on a Fiesta and that a garage is also using the same plate as seen in the picture.

Thanks, I missed the image attachment. It doesn't surprise me to be honest. Someone commented here a few months back that there were a couple of different formats of garage plates this year. That's just sloppy.

it give the details of the car registered to the same reg number as the trade plate in the second link underneath it

Yes one is green however the fact that they are trade plates means they are likely to be fixed to any make or model of car, further complicating the issue.

Surely all they'd have to do is not issue a number 131 in 2013 and no number 141 in 2014, maybe they already do this.
Either way, they're 2 different things and not easily confused.

Kind of funny that that person got a 13 on their car despite the best efforts of the superstitious powers that be.

Still the car owner with that reg could defend many a court appearance for motoring offences by claiming that there is another car in use on the roads with same reg number. Better still, they could claim that the other car using the same registration plate could on any given day be an identical car to theirs.

Well their grand plan seems to be a failure IMO as the number of 131 and even 12/11 cars I see out and about is very low and many of them are attached to company vans

Ridiculous system anyway made even worse by the fact that it's permanent.

    Tragic.... ;-)

With all the 'hype' surrounding the new '131' plate system, it appears that the powers-that-be forgot to remove any possibility of duplication between normal plates and trade plates...

Can anyone confirm what happens on July 1st - do the reg numbers reset back to #1 for the "132" plate or do the numbers continue in sequence until the end of the calendar year?
If they do reset, won't we have a lot of very similar looking reg numbers, e.g.

    131-D-100
    132-D-100

    12-D-100 and
    13-D-100 are equally similar.

By the way I still think the new system is crazy.

totally agree with posters who are saying system is rubbish, because it shows how people are uneducated and do still believe in thousand of years old legends and myths that 13 is devil number, brings bad luck etc.At the end of the day it only plastic number on your car.pfft :/

That's not the reason why the system was introduced

EDIT: Also 13 is not the "Devil Number" ... "666" is! :P

Exactly. I've ordered a new car and it'll probably arrive at the dealers in early June. But now I'd be inclined to wait till July 1st to register it. I'm sure plenty of others in the same boat will do likewise. So I guess the SIMI would argue the new system is working!
Still think the new plate numbering (131-) looks odd though.

That would be one solution, however as my original post displays they don't currently do this....hence the duplication.

In theory the plates shouldnt be confused (due to the different colouring) however the powers-that-be obviously thought it was a problem back in c.1999 when they changed trade plates to start at '101' each year (instead of '1') to avoid any possible confusion with normal plates.
My point is that they put very little thought into the reg plate system full stop - and this duplication is simply a case-in-point.

    .

Yup. I've checked lots of counties. 131D13 is a Mini and so on. Major booboo. This is another fine fcuk up by Revenue. Its like the Crewcab balls up a couple of years ago when it ended up you could reg a landrover Discovery 5 seater as a crew cab, pay small VRT and claim the VAT back on what was, for all intents and purposes, a car. And all because the Revenue couldnt see the bigger picture.
