Hi there. My partner has been offered a job based in Las Vegas and the company are currently in the process of sorting out his visa. Does anyone have any experience of living there? We have a 16 month old daughter so was wondering if it is family friendly or a nice place to live in general. Obviously we would be living away from the strip so would need to find a nice neighbourhood to rent in if anyone has any suggestions/experience?

You may be too young to remember an Irish showband singer called Brendan Bowyer from Waterford, he and his band settled in Las Vegas for years, they were the resident band in the Stardust & Elvis used to go to their shows. I recall Brendan on the Late Late Show saying that it was a great place to bring up a family. Don't have any up to date info. on the place but just thought I throw that in as reassurance.

I know you didn't ask about visas but I notice you mention your partner. Just be aware that the US doesn't provide visas for partners only spouses.

I can apply for a B2 visa for co-habiting partners which can be extended by 6 month increments for as long as my partner is in the US. Would definitely be easier to be married though!

My better half has some distant relatives who have lived there for years. She's visited them a few times. The guy parks cars and in Vegas apparently you can make an okay living doing that.

You hear stories about people living there and being able to block out the gambling stuff and how if you live out in the suburbs you dont notice it so much. But there's slot machines ALL over the place so I dont believe it. Its gotta be a major part of life.

There's slot machines in gas stations, in 7/11's, in malls, in macd's ffs...

Well he actually works in the gambling industry (although he won't be working in a casino) so we won't be able to block it out!

I'm not keen on slot machines myself. We lived in London for a few years and you see people totally addicted to them. Can only imagine how bad it is there. I guess I kind of thought that outside the strip it would be normal, didnt realise they had those everywhere.

I think its a pretty safe place to live. "Family Friendly" as far as a place like that can be, its certainly well sanitized. I dont think anyone would be too offended by anything they'd see driving down the strip for instance.

I'm not sure how the economy is doing. I know it was hit really hard by the drop in property prices, it was one of the places that suffered the most declines. I think you could probably get an amazing place to live.

There's also gun shops all over the US, doesn't mean they're all rednecks with an assault rifle in the pickup.

And there are several betting shops in every town in Ireland, doesn't mean we're all gamblers.

There's casinos in Monte Carlo full of slot machines, it doesn't mean the place is a dump.

    Hmmmm.

Las Vegas is not a "normal" city.

The equivalent in US gun shops would be guns for sale in all supermarkets, convenience stores and gas stations.

The equivalent in Ireland would be betting shop counters in ALL supermarkets and newsagents

The equivalent in Monte Carlo would be slot machines in ALL shops. And in the parks, and along the waterfront.

outside the strip and fremont street its basically like every other south-western us desert city, some nice parts, some not so nice, there are plenty of amenities for children so no worries on that front, two big water parks will open this summer in the suburbs, school quality is considered poor in terms of national average

if you can stick the 365 days of sun and 6 months where temperatures are above 90 every day you will be fine (drives some people crazy)

    You mean the Lotto. ;)

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?
