Bypass battery on laptop and just use mains?

    Hi all,

Just bought a refurb laptop and will be using it pretty much on average every weekday for about 4 or 5 hours.

So. I could recharge when the battery runs out, but as I'll be using it everyday, I would imagine the battery won't last long if I'm charging it every evening for the following days use.

So. I took off the battery. It just clipped off, and plugged in the laptop to just work off the mains and it appears to work away as normal.

Is this ok to do? Will it cause any problems?

Should be fine. Just be careful with the cord. If it pulls out (as laptop cords often do), you'll get an instant shutdown. Meaning you lose all unsaved work, and could possibly cause some corruption on your machine

ah ok. I'll make a note of that then. I might use the battery every second day, just to minimize on this!

Modern (last 15 years) laptops and batteries don't care if you leave them plugged in 24/7 365.

They charge the battery to 100% and then stop.

Last two laptops I've owned (current is 2007 vintage) have been plugged in almost full time with no ill affects, battery still lasts two hours, which is impressive given it's age.

Well, my current laptop is fried. I plugged it in all the time, and the battery is pretty much dead.

But are you saying I could leave the battery clipped to the laptop, and work off the mains?

    This is not true:

A constant trickle charge can reduce your battery life.

The No. 1 enemy of batteries is heat and it can get quite warm inside a laptop.

So removing the battery when it is not being used can prolong it's life span.

Yup, I'll charge it and use it when I am on the go, but take it out when I'm not using it to use the mains...

All you ever wanted to know about batteries... and then some. ;)

Ideally, the battery should be charged 40-45% and stored in a cool environment when it is not being used.

This has been my experience as well. Read loads about specific ways to take care of battery, but have rarely removed the battery while working with any of the laptops here and seemingly no issues.
