Factory Restore?

I'm thinking about doing a factory restore on my phone (HTC Wildfire s).
What exactly would this do for my phone, other than clear the crap off it that has built up?
I've never done one before so I'm hoping it will help make the phone run as smooth as when I got it.

If I backup my SMS and my contacts, will I only lose apps and settings?
Or is there anything else I need to do?
Will I lose the likes of photos and other files like that?
Will I lose the apps that are installed on the SD card?

if you are rooted use titanium backup to backup/restore app data (you can save the app and the data or just the data) so you can keep your save games/settings

if not rooted then use Carbon backup. not as powerful but more user friendly.

connect phone to pc and look for a folder called DCIM and copy that to SD card or your computer. This is all your photos!

It's too much of a pain to root this phone, but I'll look for that Carbon app.
Yea I know, but I'm having laptop trouble at the minute too so I'd prefer to avoid that. I think I have them anyway.

well you can use any file browser (i recommend astro) to look for it that way and you can move them to SD card without PC. some of the stock file browsers won't let you browse internal memory
