Yes you need to get a learner permit to do some lessons. Before that you will need to book and pass the driver theory test for the C category. Then get a medical and eye site test done to give with your application.

More info from RSA site:> http://www.rsa.ie/en/RSA/Learner-Drivers/Your-learner-permit/How-to-apply/

Probably a silly question on top of this but when you apply for a C learner permit is it a separate permit you get or a restriction on the current class B licence?

And just to hijack this a bit more rather than start a new thread: Do i have to do a CPC before the test if im a first time C applicant NOT intending to drive professionally?

You get a new Learners Permit, but your drivers number never changes. If you pass the test and still have time left on the permit you can transfer it to another category, it used to be free not sure with the new CC licences, so you can do EC or any other category you want by doing a theory test if necessary.

If you don't intend to drive professionally there's no need for the CPC.
