Have the basic Sky package and a very old standard box (probably 10 yrs old) ...if I was to buy a HD + box would it just be a case of inserting my card or do I need to get the box activated?

Ring sky and they'll pair the card to the box no problem.

    cheers..

Looking at the Sky site a replacement Sky + HD is 49 euro and 60 set up....anyway of getting around those charges? would they give a free box to a loyal long term customer (one who was to say ring up to cancel maybe nudge nudge)

To avail of the Sky+ features dont forget that you will need 2 cables from the dish.

Re: getting a free box. Most likely you will if you ring up and threaten to cancel. Have a read at this thread

Wasn't aware of that no...so my current set up is no good, meh don't fancy having another cable running through

Some features of the Sky+ will still be available as will the HD channels but you wont be able to record 2 programmes at the same time or record one and watch another on a single feed.

Depending on your setup its usually a simple enough job to run a second cable.

That will do for me.....it's the routing of the cable round the room I don't want

Not ideal to have just one cable,it limits the functionality of Sky+, as in you can only record the channel you have on.Trust me,it'll become a problem when you are in the middle of recording something then somebody comes along & changes the channel.
Try replacing the existing cable with shotgun cable,it's not much thicker than what you already have so isn't intrusive.

Tbh can live with the basic Sky+ as long as the HD workes fine.....the existing Sky cable (and UPC also) is behind a sealed ceiling coving which took half a day to put up, not worth tearing it all down

if it was possible to put a splitter of some sort on the end of the existing cable that would be very handy

The stacker might work, depends on cable quality and distance.

Yeah something like that, but not for that price....might be worth a search on ebay
