Polo misfiring

This happens to my polo every few months, it will be going grand then suddenly check engine light will come on and there will be no pick up at all in it, I can hear it misfiring. Take out the second plug from the left, it will be black, clean it off with a bit of sandpaper and she's good to go again. Plugs were only changed in January, it's no where near the next service interval which is 10k. Any ideas as to what's causing this?

00 Polo, 1.0L, always serviced on time.

Does it use much oil between services?

Have seen lots of these engines fouling plugs with engine oil when they are getting on a bit. The only solution is an engine rebuild.

Nothing major as far as I can tell, my father who does the servicing with me hasn't mentioned anything either. I would explain why the plug is black though when I take it out. Rebuild is expensive from what I have heard? It's been doing this since about 6 months after I got it, which is 4 years ago this year. Is it doing any harm to the engine itself?

So we opened it up this evening, plug was covered in oil and once it was cleaned off with a wire brush it was perfect again. It has used a fair bit of oil though so I am going to buy some and top it up tomorrow. It's not feasible to rebuild the engine in a car of its worth, is there anything I can do to try and rectify it in any small way, it's a decent car other than that. Plus I put a good bit of money into it last year, timing belt, brakes, back bearings so would like to get another year or two out of it if possible.
