When 4G is launched in the summer to at least the major cities and towns, will 3G coverage be increased in rural areas that cannot get 4G or will we still be stuck with EDGE?

    Thanks!!

They will probably find some way to shaft the rural folks :)

Hopefully there would be some upgrades though!

I was onto Meteor yesterday asking when it will become available. They told me May this year and are currently testing in Galway. So not too long to wait now. Coverage I assume will depend on your proximity to masts which is the norm.

Does anyone know what the general timetable is for all the operators to launch 4G? Or even DC-HDSPA?

    Three: August (http://www.3g.co.uk/PR/April2013/three-ireland-move-forward-with-4g.html)
    Meteor: May?
    O2?
    Vodafone?

I read something before about 3 and Vodafone sharing their networks in the future. I suppose that means their 4G network. I wonder does that mean Vodafone are aiming for end of the year too

I read this morning that three UK are offering existing customers 4g when it comes online without having to pay extra.
Will three Ireland be doing the same.

Abit of topic here, i plan on upgrading my usb modem to a b683 router of three , but with 4g round the corner should i wait and see what offers they give for 4g modems?

Unless there was a solid date I'd probably go ahead and upgrade... If there is anything they're good at is over budget delayed upgrades that probably won't work for most when it comes in :)

Thats what I was thinking, plus i live in donegal in the middle of nowhere so i prob be one of the last to see 4g anyways

It probably wont be available everywhere at the same time on launch. Probs be released on a staggered basis.

They only share base stations where Vodafone has a mast Three can install their equipment onto that mast giving better coverage where they previously didn't have any Same for Vodafone they can install their network gear onto a Three mast to improve Vodafone coverage in the area.

    Still two totally seperate networks,

I highly doubt Three will ever share their 4G network at all their 3G struggles enough with it's current customer base not to mention if Vodafone customers start leeching Three's signal ,, As a Three customer i certainly don't want that happening.

Three are on track for activating 4G in Dublin and north east areas first from August 2013 i don't have any more closer time frames or dates just yet.

Just reading your posts on 4G in rural areas. The National Broadband Scheme promises at least 30Mb/s minimum for every household in Ireland by 2015. This will only be achived by 4G.

Personally as somebody who lives rurally, this would be amazing, but unlikely.

Quote? afaik the NBS ends in 2014 so I can't see it providing 3G in 2015 but can't find any reference to the 2014 date but I'm sure I read it on the DCENR site at one stage.

My apologies, National Broadband plan, Please seen enclosed PDF. This could be a bit of political show boating from Minister Rabitte

thanks that doc has the info I was looking for.....

    There can be no State intervention in areas covered by the National Broadband Scheme until the expiry of the contract in August 2014. The Government intends that any new initiative will be procured and ready to rollout by that date;

Not only did the mobile operators buy spectrum for 4G services but they also bought spectrum to increase 3G services. Vodafone have promised that everywhere 2G is currently available, will have 3G coverage. They have already started upgrading their 3G infrastructure. I believe O2 have started this month also.

Samsung were moving 1000Mbps per second on 5g the other day.

Makes 12-15mbps 4g look glacial already. Gonna take them another 4 years to agree on a standard.

    2020 release.

I just had a look at the Comreg Siteviewer, and I've noticed they've updated it to use Google maps (about time). More interestingly however, if you click on a mast site now, it lists GSM, 3G and LTE details.

Does this mean the site ACTUALLY has a 4G radio there, or is it that it is just licensed to do so? It lists alot of masts in my area as with LTE but I doubt it's the case as where I live is very rural.

My understanding is that the companies are supposed to provide comreg the mast info within iirc 30 days of completing the work (many don't seem to bother or comreg get behind with the updates) so yes I think that means the mast has LTE but not sure if it means its live, only a test will tell.

Our small town in west limerick has only 2 masts but both have LTE ticked (vodafone and 02)

According to RTE, 4G rollout is in the Autumn. They also had pilot access to Vodafones network, achieving 52Mbps down speed.

Check again. I checked my local sites a few days ago and all nearby one had LTE ticked so I checked a lot and the whole country seemed to have LTE ticked.

Seems this has now been rectified and LTE will not be available in such remote outposts as Rockchapel and Dunquin from the outset :D
