Buying 08/09 Hatch

So I'm looking at getting myself my first car (been driving a Focus mk1 1.6 petrol for the last 5 years). I've been considering 08/09 diesel hatchbacks like the Golf/Focus/C4/308 etc. Budget is probably sub €10k.

I'm not sure whether I'm justified getting petrol or diesel tbh. I'll be doing about 20,000km a year on mixed roads - a bit of everything in equal proportions really.

The one petrol motor I've been considering is an 07/08 Golf 1.4 TSI 140bhp. I know it's not the *most* efficient petrol, but would sure be fun to drive!

What would people's suggestions be in that class of car? I'm a 22yo male, so no crazy stuff due to insurance!

You would probably be better off with the 122bhp TSi engine as it is more reliable than the 140bhp/170bhp engines. Personally though, I think Golfs are overpriced second hand considering what you get for your money.

I'd look into a Seat Leon with the 1.4tsi - there was a decent looking 08 on done deal last week for under 7k...

I love the exterior of the Seats, but the interiors really let them down. Pure plastic.

What's the difference in the 122/140/170bhp engines? Is the 122 just turbo, and other two are turbo + supercharger?

Hyundai i30 or Kia Cee'd would be my choice, both are the same mechanically and are highly reliable, along with that they are very well built.

The 140 and 170 have a supercharger and a turbo.
