Unlocking pattern pin in Vodafone Smart phone, Please Help

I wonder if anyone can help me, my son has a pattern lock on his phone, which he has forgotten. It's one of those patterns with nine dots and you have to select a sequence of four to unlock the phone. He's only nine, so he's forgiven but I kept trying the sequence hoping to get to a point where it asked me for his gmail…

He's only nine, so he's forgiven but I kept trying the sequence hoping to get to a point where it asked me for his gmail password or something like that but it doesn't. It just keeps locking for 30 seconds and then asking you to try again. We have tried over 30 times to no avail. Can anyone please help?

Are you not getting something similar to this after 5 attempts?

Clicking on Forgot Pattern should take you to the google sign in page and allow you to reset the pattern. I assume that a google account has been fully set up? if not I'm not sure that an unlock is possible, other than a hard reset, taking the phone to factory default.
