Transferring apps from one device to another via the Play Store

    Hi all,

I recently lost my Sony R800i and today purchased a new phone, a Huawei Ascend G300. I've added my Google account and my Gmail, contacts etc all restored but the apps I had downloaded to my Sony no longer appear in the Play Store App under "My Apps" and have not been re-downloaded.

I ticked the box for "Backup my data" and "Automatic Restore" and hoped that might start the process but it didn't and I've "Sync'd" my account several times.

When I log into the Play store on my PC I can see my old device and all the apps I had on it and now my new phone is listed also but I can't see any way to tell the app store to send all the apps I had on my old Sony down to my new phone.

Am I missing something obvious or do I really have to re-download the apps manually one by one?

    Ben

    Hi Ben.

Complete and utter guess by me here, but is it possible that some of the apps aren't compatible with your new phone?

Did you not have an sgs3 I thought I seen you say that in am earlier post.

    Hi Sam,

Good guess but wrong I'm afraid. There's 100 apps listed under the old phone some of which have been manually downloaded to the new phone without any problem.

You are right about my phone however  I had an SGS 2 which I custom ROM'd to within an inch of it's life. I'm now on a Note 2 which I've left 100% stock. Just can't see the benefit in flashing a custom ROM, the thing is the nuts straight out of the box.

Rather than explain that it was my son who lost his phone and was now moving over to a new Ascend G300 I thought I'd short cut the explanation and put the story in the first person but I should have known Boards is a small community and someone should call me out on it :o

    Hi Ben..

I've never yet succeeded with Play restoration of Apps, when changing Phones or ROMs....

I would love to see an explanation and I usually end up re-downlloading the Apps from the Play list of Apps I have...

I think Play sees a new phone as a completely separate entity, and only restores Apps to an identical device to the lost or discarded device.

    I think???

And even though I bought Titanium BU a long time ago, I rarely use it.....

restoring data and settings with TBU causes more probs than its worth.

Titanium works perfectly for me, I'd go with that in future.

TBU is OK, I'll grant...as far as it goes!!

but in the OP's situation, he lost his phone, and just wanted to restore his Apps to a new phone, and would have needed his TB bk-ups on external storage [PC/Mac/Computer/Laptop] or in the Cloud!!

Also, he would first have needed to install TB again, by d/l from Play, or having a CWM flashable zip, which can be made with TB, but you need a custom recovery, and the zip needs to be also stored externally.

And would of course needed to anticipate this event firstly by having TB installed, a back-up made and stored on media other than the phone SD card.

So, a lot of if's and but's there, IMO.

But some ppl do it!! :)

I used to, cos I worked in such an environment, always having up-to-date backups, stored externally, or in the Cloud.

So, as you say, for the future, TB perhaps??

The OP had selected, in privacy settings, Back up Data and Auto restore, so everything should be OK from the Google Play scenario, except this is a different device, and auto restore will not restore Apps to a new device, the data will be restored, including App data.

As you will be able to connect to Play on your PC, with your normal log-in details, there is the solution I always use now, which relies on Google servers having a recorded list of every App you ever bought or downloaded, just use this, like so....

    Play_Store.jpg

they will be there, under your existing lost device, or if it was wiped or factory reset, under Other Apps in my Library.

You can pick and choose what you want to restore.

There is also App Brain and it's companion, Fast Web Installer...

EDIT: Bloody Fast Web Installer has stopped working again, so I scratched it...sorry!!!

which are useful to make lists of your Apps, and push install them to your new device....of course you need to download both and log-in with your Google Account details.

As for backups, I now use Carbon, which is very good, and worth a look.

    Hi IP,

Thanks for the detailed feedback, I'd figured out that I can manually re download the apps from the play store so that's what I'll have to do.

We crossed paths earlier ref coder dojo!

BTW, I've encountered one snag with the G300. It doesn't work with Beats Solo HD headphones. Other headphones work fine on the G300 but the Beats only generate terrible quality low volume sound although they work fine on my Note 2.

I wonder is there a cable I can get from beats which is set up to work with whatever standard the G300 jack is?
