You'll be thanking your lucky stars it's "only" 2 laps when you're racing it.

Thanks Lenny, I guess time will tell how long the A4 race will be.

+1 on this. I would've packed last year if we'd had to go up a third time.

    Maps:

    Sun: http://app.strava.com/segments/1232587

Finish lines are both end of segments.

Its a world of pain. When you think its over you take a right hand turn and it really ramps up for a very short time.

Snowtown is a drama in three parts, none of them very long. It kicks up just after the turn at the crossroads. With a decent position, a good shove out of the saddle will get you over this first hump - prob only 100 metres or so. It goes up again after a couple of hundred metres and this is another short sharp shock. After a bit more on the flat, the last part come immediately after a right hand bend. This is the longest piece and takes you to the top. It's still only 300 metres or so but it can be enough to finish you off. A straight fast descent follows and it's well worth sticking to your task because it often re-groups at the bottom of the hill.

It's not like the hills in Wicklow. It's punchy stuff rather than out and out climbing and there's plenty there for those with enough power.

Must try and incorporate it in a run from Naul.

so basically, go straight instead of turn into Stamullen. Take a left towards navan rd and a right towards the race course.

    From Stamulllen coming from Gormanston.
Go striaght thru Stamullen village. take no turns ie when you are faced with the 3 roads in front of you keep to the left then keep around to the right. When faced with a crosroads : Right is Bellewstown: Straight is Ardcath: Left is Paintown Snowtown.

    From the Naul:
Pub on your left hand side. Go straight and you are on the other side of Snowtown.
when dropping down the other side make sure you keep to the left as you go round the bend.

After the turn to the right, it ramps up to 12% in places. Only for a short time, but enough to put me out the back the last 2 years in a row!

Is this a race series a secret? Can someone from Stamullen give a post on times, place to sign on, and what race is what. Cheers.

I suspect t'internet has not permeated Stamullen yet ...

Just drive through the area and listen out for Gaybo's dulcet tones - you'll soon work out where all the action is ... (CI website says 7pm Friday, 12.30 Saturday and Sunday, which I presume are race times)

While innocently pedalling through stamullen this afternoon I spotted a number of signs warning locals of a race on Saturday from 11 til 2. I'm guessing sign on will be from 9 or 9:30 going off previous race times.

    A3 3 laps @80km? Should that be 60Km.

A4 race seems very short but by god snowtown wouldn't be welcome a third time at race pace!

Friday night race very fast and flat, Did it two years ago with the A3's and first three lasp we avergaed 44kph. Was class. from Pilltown out to N1 down to julianstown left towards Laytown one little bump and into the only dodgy corner and then road not great. 2 years ago A3's stayed away but Martyn Irvine (whatever happened to him:D) Paul Kennedy and Javan nulty bridged with one other just before the end, wth Marty beating Paul.

As the a4 race is <40k is that just points for the first 3?

Due to the changes in the points allocation agreed at last years AGM I would think there will still be points for the first eight regardless of distance but I could be wrong.40K around this is tougher than 70k most other races.

Any distance under 50km = 1st 3 home for points
Any distance over 50km = 1st 8 home for points

Do not think they will change the rule on points for individual races

I think it was 1st 6 get the points last year in a a4 race over 50km, so no need to hide that you got a point.

Except that it was two and a bit laps, which is less than 50k.

Tonight's course is 9km exactly (or at least it was last year), which makes 5 laps 45km

No chance if the handicaps are the same as last year - think we were given about a minute and were caught early on lap 2

I think that one of the problems with open handicapped races is the handicaps are too small, leaving little incentive to try and stay away and resulting in very large bunches combining early on in the race, particularly with a flat course like tonight's. Everyone then tries to get near the front, speading the race across the road and resulting in increased risks being taken. TBH last year I worked hard in that first lap, but there were very few others prepared to do so, and then tried to hang on at the back until I was finally dropped on the penultimate lap.

of the handicap races ive done it seems like people are resigned to the fact that they will be caught so sit in and do very little. I think jensie said if you attack you might not win 95% of the time, but if you dont attack you wont win 100% of the time. Sure it will be great craic :)

It's certainly the most fun. It's always a bit depressing when someone's summary of their race is that they 'finished in the bunch' without trying anything.
