CROW TRAPS

    HI

I was looking at a post from Mallards put on about his trap he made. IT has no ladder just a long gap on it. Just wondered if he has had any escapees? I made one for a chap. Being a joiner it was easy. The ladder part is 5 foot long x 12 inches wide and gaps of & 4 "3/4". So a crow that drops in supposedly can't get out. The chap phoned and said and said one has got out. Anyone come across one like this?

Also 18" from each end it's boarded so they can't climb the sides, and get out through the bars. :)

Do you have high sides either side of the ladderless ladder gap? Idea being that the crow flies to the highest point of the inside of the trap, which shouldn't be the way he came in.

yes i have high sides either side, and it is ladder type both ends are boarded in 18" long.now after talking to the game conservancy,i have made the gaps 5"x 4" before they were 10" x 4"crows will still get in but not out,i will see how it goes i will post some picks when i get the hang of this web site.

Hard to say if any ever got out, i never witnessed any getting out, and it usually always had crows in it when i went to it. I never put any rungs in it as it was only a temporary pen and not worth the hassle for me but it wouldn't do any harm I'm sure.
    cheers.

have you got wire running up the middle of the ladder or 2 strands preferably, so the crow/mag drops in with wings tight but then cant exit with the wings extended!

no i haven't,but reduced the rung gap size by putting a 2x1 lathe on top making them 5"x 4" now they should not get out,can you explain how this cable / wire fits on the underneath ,is it away from the rungs or fitted to them, cheers.

the maggie one is covered in on top except for the pop holes, 9"L x 5"W,they dont mess about on top like the all mesh ones, just straight in and i have over 5000 maggies over my time, the crow one is working now and today i took the lath off the top and put 2 wires underneath the rungs 6" down so they drop through the rungs through the wire but not back up,my rungs are set at 10"long 4" gap,i do hope you can see the pics may have done it wrong be so kind and let me know if you can see them.cheers.and thanks for all your advice, two heads are better than one.

hi tawny, you havnt done bad there,if you notice on my maggie trap all the top is boarded over just trap doors showing, also they are made near to the call bird thats all they see really and in they go,they dont mess about on top, same as the side entry in my opinion there not worth a carrot, one chap phoned me and said have you another maggie this one is dead,so give him another, afew days later same again,3 times this happened so i ended up going to his place to see why his birds are not lasting,he had his trap set up over a compost pile, one made with pallets and the trap was set resting on top, ideal he thought didnt have to make a stand, cos i did tell him off the floor save a fox taking it,well its the gases from the compost which was doing the call bird in,so be careful where you set up,hope this helps,

i do find having doors on each trap handy for getting the bird out that you have caught, saves going through the top trap door,i find it more easier .
