    Hi Op,
Living in a rural area can be hard at times, never mind when youre unemployed. would you be interested in further education, i saw recently about course that the SW offer to help you learn new skills and i'm not just talking about ECDL (not that anything wrong with that!) but there are wide range and you still would get your benefits ..
a friend of mine was in same situation after being let go and she found a course and is actually emplyed in that area now.
I would go to your local office and ask.. at least it would get you out of the house.
Apart from that, is there any informal groups in or near your area you could join, sports, mens sheds, ..

Dunno if my advice any good but just thought i'd put it out there!
    Good luck!

I think you should try volunteer around where you live, it looks better in terms of interviews and CV's. You will be showing potential employers that you are keeping busy and still doing something with yourself instead of sitting around for 2 years, it doesn't look good and they will ask you what have you been doing in those 2 years!

Volunteering is great, but can be hard if you're rural and don't have transport. Have you looked at distance learning? You could also start a vegetable patch in the garden to give you something to do.

I feel your pain, I'm unemployed the same amount of time and until I got on to a Fás course I was going out of my mind with boredom. I took up crochet (which is great because you can look for a local 'stitch and bitch' group), and the tin whistle to pass the time.

There is a few things you could do.

    Volunteer work.
    Join a gym.
    Take up running.
    Take up a sport(football etc)
    Do a course.
    Do an online course.
visit a family member or Friend.

i would love to volunteer but the nearest town is too far to travel and would cost me alot of money to travel by bus every day over 10 euro, also the nearest gym is the same distance im liveing on a very small amount of money so cant really afford to leave the house :(

Running is free. Get out once a day and go for a walk/jog/run. It clears the head, its good for you and it gets you out of the house.

I hope things turn around for you op.

Have you any elderly neighbours in the area that you could visit. I'm sure they'd be delighted of the company.. help you both pass a couple of hours.
Depending on your work experience (ie if you have experience of a trade) you could contact your local Age Action Ireland.. They're always looking for volunteers to help fix things up for the elderly living in your area.

Could you cycle? Have a family member/freind drop you?
Or put a small amount of money by each week and get a bus ticket.
I don't see how traveling to your nearest town each day could cost over €10 each day. what kind of bus is it

I feel your pain ... the suggestions you are after getting are really good ones, you have to keep your mind open and active and what will come your way will come in time when you least expect it , I know when im waiting on something to come it never does only when I forget about it and least expect it, then it comes!! .. best of luck!

Perhaps take up a new hobby, be it cooking/gardening/photography whatever interests you.

While I was looking for a job I started a blog, I wrote a bit about what I did each day including pics and what not... Not only was it great for passing the time, it encouraged me to do something different everyday and I was surprised how much I added to my cv...

I was out of work for a year, living in an isolated area with little or no access to transport; I took up some distance courses to keep myself busy, it helped me pass the time a bit more easily.

Get stuck into exercise - I would recommend running. Will get you out of the house, get you fit, make you feel good, increase energy levels and it's free.

Hey OP, funnily enough I was going to start a thread on this as I'm going through similar problems, I can fully relate to how your feeling, I've been on a deferral from college for the past year(personal reasons) and have been struggling in the interim to get any form of work. It can be hugely depressing to say the least. What many people in better positions don't realise is that when your luck is down, so is the self-confidence and ability to retain hope for a better future. My advice would be to possibly take up some form of study(even night course or similar), and make relevant changes to the CV that highlight your abilities in a given field(and the level of qualification you have/will have after completing said course). Just keep the head up and you'll catch your break, best of luck and take care, EZ

You are trying to push op over the edge right?
