High handicapper - driver - custom fit

Played for 5 months last year and a few months so far in '13 !

My game is going well but My driving is all over the shop and I know I can get lessons but just looked at my driver and it is stiff ! I believe that is a major problem for a beginner !

Considering a custom fit with mcguirks, I think fore golf is over the top for me at the moment and they cost about twice as much, they don't take the fit price off and don't do trade ins ?

    Advice ?

Bolded and underlined bit isn't necessarily true, if you are looking to spend your money wisely then go and get a few lessons and while there ask the pro about your driver and rest of set, he'll be only too happy to oblige.

Rather than spending money on a custom fit would you not get a few lessons and figure out what you should be doing before looking at the equipment.

At the end of the day the ball will go where your technique sends it and the clubs make a small difference in the overall outcome.

My advice is get custom fit when you have a repeatable swing that you can trust and when this and all the basics are right then look at customising around it otherwise you will be using the wrong clubs once you do fix the errors.

Yes but a stiff shaft is out for a beginner and I need a new driver anyway !

Why is it out? The shaft is defined by your swing not how long you have played

Lessons and fixing your swing will help more than a new club custom fit... It's up to yourself but that's what I know I would look at first and also get advice on clubs from a PGA pro who knows your swing rather than a sales person no matter how good they are they will have a bias (believe me I worked in a Golf shop for a few years)

Could you describe the typical problems you find with driving ?

Do you know what your swing speed is ?

As indicated by other posters, changing to a different flex driver may turn out to be an option, but right now it's unlikely that it will make any noticeable difference. First learn to swing, then learn what to swing.

get a loan of a regular shaft and see if it makes any difference.

Can you describe your bad shots?
Using Stiff when not advised would typically go right due to the club face being still open at impact and the ball flying lower than ideal.

"All over the shop" to me would indicate a swing problem = go get a lesson.

Greebo - actually go about 150 yards , a bit of a draw and very low but tend to be on the fairway !

ok thats pretty different to my description of "all over the shop"!

Have you tried a regular shaft?
Whats your 3wood shaft and how do you hit it?

I don't use a 3 wood mate, hybrid 20.5 and reg - very good but a bit low

I've a regular driver here (Dublin), Callaway Diablo Octane, that you're free to use for a while.
It's 11.5 degree too, so might help get it in the air abit more.

As others have said, the swing is key but you're free to use this if you want
