    Hi all,
so am full time permanent for 2.5 years, and I do love my job........but I am getting itchy feet to travel, for a year.

The ideal scenario would be to take a year off work, and return then. I havent officially asked, Ive only been questioning it with a few close colleagues, and apparently the company doesnt have anything in their handbook about this.

My question is, should I ask a manager more officially if anything like this is possible? Would it look bad (even if not possible)? It would also give someone else out there an opportunity for a job for a year.

    Anyone ever done this before?

    Thanks

Lots have done this before... the question is whether it is worth their while holding a job open for a year with the risk you won't return.

I personally wouldn't guarantee you a job on return... just tell you "let me know when you're back and we'll hopefully have a spot for you."

If you are so awesome that you are worth holding a job open for you are good enough to find work without the job being held open.

The job I do is very niche market.

But what I am asking (not about my awesomeness), is would it look bad to even enquire? I love my job, Im good at my job, but Im not my job. There are lots of other things I want to do too :).

Sorry but being in a niche market just make it that much more unlikely you'd have a job coming back as they can't pull in someone from another department to cover easily and most likely need to hire someone new; never hurts asking but I'd make it a friendly question to the boss over coffee break more then anything else though.
