I'm just wondering in the full licence test do you really need to be able to do the push and pull method of steering.
If you do would it be a instant fail or just a minor fault, also would it be a fail I you crossed hands. Thanks

There is no specific requirement to do pull/push steering but what will be looked for is that you have full control of the steering wheel at all times so there are a couple of things you should keep in mind :

    - Keep both hands on the wheel majority of the time, dont drive one-handed except when left hand needed for gear changes etc.
    - Definitely do not 'palm' turn the steering wheel!
    - Dont let the wheel slip through your hands after a turn, guide it back to the straight position.
    - Keep hands at approx 9 and 3 position but dont over think it, doesnt have to be exact, its more a case of don't drive along with 2 hands holding the bottom or the top of the steering wheel

As for crossing your hands it depends on what you are doing, small overlaps are fine as you move your hands around the wheel - I guess simple way to say it is your left hand should control the left side of the wheel and the right hand control the right side with minor overlaps at the top and bottom of the wheel - you shouldnt end up with both hands on the wheel and have them crossed.

Not the easiest thing to do tbh if you must go from 1st gear to second.
