Ford Mondeo buying advice please

I usually drive Jap cars and want to change my car, I dont have much money to spend, max would be €1500 cash or I could trade in my 99 corolla with it and look at cars around the 2k mark. There are not many jap options in the 1.6 to 1.8 range with low miles and NCT.
I was considering a Ford Mondeo as they seem to be fairly cheap compared to other Jap cars.
Any reason why I should avoid a Mondeo ?
I took a test drive in a 01 1.8 petrol Mondeo yesterday and was surprised by the comfort, space, and general feel of the car, it was a lot more quite on the road than my corolla too, I overtook a truck and it didnt seem to have a lot of power in it but there was three adults on board and maybe I needed to drop a gear ?
The 01 Mondeo had a Duratec HE engine, is the Zetec better ?
Ive heard they can be thirsty, are they reliable ?
    Any advice is welcome... thanks.

honestjohn.co.uk would be a good place to start. I've an 08 estate which is a fantastic car, like you I'd only by Japanese before that. Quality is a massive improvement over the Fords of the early 90's.

Thanks, had a read of the review, the 04 models seems to be the one to go for.
Any reasons why not to buy one ?

I wouldn't discount a Mazda 6 or Honda Accord just because you want something non Japanese.

I have a 04 mondeo 1.8zetec. Great car, only cost €1300 bout 6mths ago. Had one previously also.Had no probs with either. Zetec has a bit of extra poke. The cars were updated in 04 and the interior is much better in the 04 model so these are ones to go for if you can. I get about 35mpg so not bad effeciency either.
