    Hi there,

I already have a full license, but a friend from France(half-irish) was wondering how much would it cost for him here to get a full license? He doesn't intend on getting a car, he just knows that its ridiculously expensive back at home.

If he has no Learner Permit then he'll need to do the Theory Test which according to the RSA.ie site is 45 euro.
The Learner Permit itself seems to cost 35 euro.
Then he'll have to do 12 mandatory lessons and depending on the area he lives in they can cost 30-55 euro each (or per hour)
If he doesn't have anyone who's car he practise in in between he may need to pay for more lessons depending on how quickly he picks it up.
Then the test itself costs 85 euro and if he's using an instructors car there'll be a fee for that too, it's usually the cost of an hour, sometimes they do a deal with you, depends on the instructor.
He might want to do a pretest as well so that's another hour.
So pay for minimum 14 hours I would imagine.
And that's assuming he passes first time.
If he fails he won't have to do the 12 mandatory again though, just what ever he needs to get him to pass the second time.
    So
    35 (theory)
    45 (permit)
420 - 800ish (lessons, pretest, car rental for test)
    85 (actual test)
About a grand to pass first time?

I'm sorry, but only an idiot (no offence :D ) or someone who doesn't shop around, or someone who is paying per lesson as they go, would pay 55 quid for lessons. That is madness imo. When I moved back here from the US, I did my research, shopped around & got someone really good who only charged me 300 euros for my 12 mandatory EDT lessons. That works out at 25 quid per lesson and I am in Dublin, which apparently is more expensive to get lessons in than any other part of the country. I had my own car and access to family members cars, so I didn't have to pay anyone to use their car to practice in, or take the test in. I guess I came in at around the 500 euros mark (or therebouts) when all was said and done.

Dublin is actually probably cheapest to learn because there are so many instructors and you CAN shop around.

Would you be able to PM the details of that driving instructor please.

I found a 12 lesson package in my town for €290 which isn't too bad (for Ireland I mean, in Canada I got 10 lessons for around €80).

Someone should really start a service where they provide low quality lessons, for dirt cheap. This service being aimed for people who already have the skill required to pass the test.
