I bid on ebay for my first time. I placed the bid a couple days ago for very low prices on something i wanted. There were no other bids until an hour before close and another bid an extra 50 cents. i was not at the computer to respond and lost. i looked at the buyer and saw it was the buyer's first time. I wondered if the seller had got someone to buy it as no other bids came in. i am not bothered but curious - an hour before the close lucky hit

Often buyers wait until near the end of the auction before bidding. I often bid in the last 30 secs of an auction.

Could be shill bidding either .

If the buyer contacts you again , ignore him and move on

A sudden rush of bids within seconds of an auction ending is common. There is even software you can use to automatically place your bids at the last second.

It is possible that someone might get a friend to bid on their item in order to drive up the price. But if you have decided before hand what the maximum you are willing to pay is, then it should make no difference to you what the item finally sells for. Don't get caught up in the exceitement of a bidding war. Unless the item is incredibly rare then just accept you were outbid and bid on the next one to be listed.

Also bear in mind that if the friend out bids you and wins the aucton. The friend will be obliged to buy the item from the seller. Even if they don't actually exchange any money, the seller will still have to pay the 10% final value fee to eBay. So would lose 10% when this happens. So it's a risky manouver for a seller to try.

Shill bidding is against ebay rules and if you are convinced it is happening can be reported to eBay who will investigate it.
