Commuting from Donabate to Grand Canal area - Best ticket/route

    Hi all,

I have started a new job and am currently commuting to it by bus from Wicklow (133). However I may be moving to Donabate in the next while and I am just wondering if anyone could recommend the best route and ticket to use? Am I right in thinking that the train is the only option?

Mu current journey is an hour and a half each way and €45 per week so I'm hoping for something cheaper and quicker. I already own a leap card and I do have a student card but not a travelcard and I have no real way of getting one.

This is only for the next three months. If anypne knows what the costs would be like I would appreciate knowing.

    Thanks,
    MCR

The easiest way is to get the train from Donabate and change at Connolly or Pearse for Grand Canal Dock station but try this for pointing up other options.

Tickets and prices are available at http://www.irishrail.ie and http://www.dublinbus.ie. If there are private options the journey planner will point those out. If you need links to any private operators pointed up by the Transport for Ireland journey planner then Google will help.

Also Dublin Bus route 33D operates from Donabate to the city via the Port Tunnel.

Train 37 mins, bus 1 hour according to the Transport for Ireland planner.

Have a look at irishrail.ie - you should be able to get a commuter train all the way. They are fairly regular and take about 40 mins. Some of them go all the way to Lansdowne, but worst case scenario you would hop off in Connolly, Tara or Pearse and onto a dart for a couple of stops. There is definitely a train in the evening from Lansdowne that goes all the way to Donabate without a change.

Not sure if Donabate is within the short hop zone (but think it is, think Balbriggan is the outside limit). Tickets are much cheaper if you get them through work - have a look at taxsaver.ie for info.

I wouldn't take the DB times from that planner too literally, particularly in the case of he 33D.

In practice the 33D can take 40-45 mins, plus it fills a long gap in evening rail services.

Am I right in thinking that there's only one bus each way a day or did I misread that timetable?

Unfortunately I can't avail of the taxsaver scheme.

That's correct - only the one bus.
