Samsung Galaxy SII died forever - need replacement for ~ €100

    Hi all

Well, my darling SGSII, after all the abuse I've put it through, finally died after falling off the kitchen counter with a heart-sickening bang. :( The screen looked fine, and I could turn it on, but the display was gone.

I had insurance (I thought), but it turns out it's been lapsed since December. They sent the letter about that to an old address - my own fault for not updating them when I moved. :(:(

I brought it into GSM on Middle Abbey Street yesterday and they told me today that it's too damaged to be worth fixing. :(:(:(

I have about nine months left on my contract!! :(:(:(:(

Anyway, I need a replacement, but I definitely can't afford another SII. I'm looking at adverts.ie and eBay, but I don't really know what I should be looking for - and any good deals are (obviously) snapped up pretty quickly.

I was wondering if you guys have any recommendations for a smartphone I could get for around €100 (second hand).

I can't be picky at this stage (I'm using a Nokia 5130 at the moment (:(:(!)), so all I really want is a touch screen phone that can hold a fair bit of music, preferably with a radio ('cause I find the radio apps to be a bit hit and miss). The camera isn't that important. I'd love something like the Samsung, 'cause it just works so smoothly, but anything really that can get me back on the Internet with the swipe of a screen will make me happy again.

I don't know any of the Smartphone providers other than Samsung and Apple (from my young and foolish days), but I'll go for anything.

Any advice would be really appreciated! Sorry for the long post, but I'm devastated by the loss of my most favourite inanimate object!!

I took out an 18 month contract to get this phone. I reckon I have about 9 months left on it, so I don't think I'd be due an upgrade. If I extended the duration of the contract (which I would happily do), do you think they'd give me a new phone?

I know - the SII is just a beautiful piece of kit! What did you miss from the SII after getting the Ace?

    Thanks guys!!

Ahhh - ya lucky fecker! :P I can live with slower speed - once it's not ridiculously slow! And, I've been playing Bounce Tales on the Nokia out of sheer boredom without the internet. It's terrible, and goes to show how bad my attention span is these days.

Is it just the screen do you reckon? I have an S2 here that I'm breaking for parts. The phone is in excellent condition but I was caught by a scammer after I bought it from DD he reported it lost a week later..Prick..

If its just a screen I'm sure I could sell it to you :)

Thanks Darragh. The screen part itself is fine, but the board inside is damaged so the display won't work at all. Thanks again though!

Total pain for you that you got caught. There are some pure gits out there!!

Are you sure the screen snap on ribbon cable connector hasn't come off with the shock of the fall?

    OP, check around.
I've found some shops (Not the one mentioned, oh no, not at all... << ) to be a little clueless for any repairs outside the very basic.

For your price point I'd second Aristotle's suggestion and go with the Huawei G300.

It's a brilliant phone for the price and easily unlocked IIRC.

€99.99 on Vodafone.ie if you get a free SIM from another network and use it to port to Vodafone and also €24 cashback through Fatcheese when you go through them.

I got that phone two weeks ago and it's brilliant and unreal value. Good battery life and nice large clear 4 inch screen.

Well, thanks all you guys for your suggestions! I was going to go for the SG Ace, but I rang o2 today and, turns out my contract is ending in July. They're letting me upgrade early, so I could get a new SGS2 for €99. Or, I could get an SGS3 for €109. OR, when released, I could get an SGS4 for €189...

So, I'm going to grit my teeth and stick with the Nokia ''till the end of the month and then get an SGS4. I think that's the best result all in all.

    SGS4 - yay!!!
