Fuel pump failure? Is fuel getting to the engine? Can you hear it running with the ignition on but without trying a start?

Flooded engine following failed start? Leave it for ten minutes and try again, or pull out the fuel pump fuse and turn the engine over until it starts and then dies. Then reinsert the fuse and try again.

Starter motor Bendix not engaging? Can you hear the starter motor running but the engine will not turn over? Take off the starter motor and free the Bendix.

Is the starter motor running? If it is you should hear it clearly. If it isn't, check its electrical connections, especially the earth braid (these can corrode away).

Check the battery -- does it have a full charge (around 13.5 volts or at least above about 10 volts)? If it doesn't it won't start the engine. Possibly try a jump start from another vehicle to rule the battery in or out.

Turn on the headlights and then try a start. If the headlights dim to almost nothing then the battery has insufficient charge.

The starter motor is operated by a solenoid switch. If the battery is low or the starter motor is jammed you should still hear the click as the solenoid tries to engage. If you don't hear it then the solenoid may have failed, an electrical connection has failed, or the battery voltage is too low ( the latter unlikely as even a low battery voltage will usually still operate the solenoid but with insufficient power to move the engine.

There are all sorts of other reasons why a vehicle suddenly decides not to start, so all of the above are guesses based on the limited information you have given. Perhaps if you try the above and then post the results, there will be others who can point you in the right direction.-

i have a spark at the end of ht leads cant tell if fuel is getting through, though the engine turns over fine not a battery issue as its an ex police van and it has a up-rated battery due to the extra electrics that were installed, starter is fine and everything else works electricly apart from the millage display the bulb blew and havent got round to replacing yet

Sorry, was out last night, so didn't see your post. As far as I am aware the fuses are on the RHS under the dash behind a cubby hole. Can't recall off hand which fuse it is. Possibly first look for any blown fuses?

Try turn it over with one of the leads off the plug, then whip the plug out straight away and check for fuel on it.
