what to swap q6600 for?

I've started a topic last year about upgrading (see here) and ended up just buying a new graphics card.
So another year has passed as I think it's the time to finally upgrade my old Q6600. It has no problem being overclocked to 3.6GHz, but with new games it can be too slow, and framerate drops below 60fps, which is not acceptable for me.

What would be the best option for me? I want a cpu which will be significantly faster than the current one without spending a fortune. Is any of the AMDs worth the money? Or maybe look at the old reliable 2500K/2550K? Or even get something without "k" as I think most of the i5s will get me to the 4.2GHz (or am I wrong here?). I don't play much, but when I do I want it to be as smooth as possible.

I can spend about 350-400 (CPU+mobo+8GB). Any help appreciated!

    current rig:
    Foxconn X38A + Q6600@3.6 + 2x2GB DDR2 G.Skill 8500 + AMD/ATI 6950 unlocked 2GB

What GPU? So far my 6600@3.5 has never been a limiting factor.

Yeah, little beefier than my 7870.

DDR2 or DDR3 on your board?

In any case, 3570k, z77 board, wham bam.

DDR2, I know 3570K may be a beast but at the same time I don't want GPU to be bottleneck there. Any lower-spec CPU would do?

Your memory is probably your bottleneck right now :p

3570k is a good buy as it'll last when you jump to your next GPU in all likelyhood. You could go for cheaper, but Im not sure its the best option thinking long term.

what about mobo/ram? would 8GB be ok, or should I go for 16?

8 is ALWAYS enough. You won't have a bottleneck except with a gtx690 or something like it!

Can't go wrong with what's already been recommended.

    Item|Price
    Intel Core i5-3570K Box, LGA1155|€207.02
    ASRock Z77 Pro3, Sockel 1155, ATX|€85.04
    8GB-Kit G.Skill RipJaws-X PC3-12800U CL9|€47.24
    Shipping|€18.99
    Total|€358.29

If you want to go Crossfire in the future then up the motherboard to an Extreme 3.

Sure if you've waited this long, you might as well wait another two months or so for socket 1150?

A few small bits of information here and there. Here's one.

    http://www.guru3d.com/news_story/intel_core_i7_4770k_haswell_benchmarks_surface.html

But that tells you feck all really until they test it across the board. You'll have to wait until closer to release... which as far as I am aware, hasn't been announced yet.

    ~June is expected.

we'll see. not a big fan of jumping onto new platform straight away, but not in a rush to buy also

You have no upgrade path if you go with 1155 now but 1150 should have two generations, going by what their plans indicate. You wouldn't be saving much money either as prices haven't really improved on the last couple of generations of Intel CPUs over time, apart from the first two weeks when there's high demand.
It's unlikely enough that we'll see any major issues like the early P67 etc. motherboards which had faulty SATA ports and they were all replaced when the problem was discovered. Problems with drivers are usually ironed out pretty fast unless you use linux in which case 6 months of a lag is an advantage if you don't want to be delving into tweaking drivers.

judging by the current setup, which btw lasted about 7 years I don't think I'll be upgrading in near future. as I said - we'll see. I really don't want to go over 400 mark even by few euros.
