Saab 93 hard to start

    Hi,
my brother in law's Saab 9-3 is getting hard to start. 2005 120 bhp 8 valve diesel with 120,000 miles.

He said it had been hard to start for a week or two with an error message relating to water in fuel filter.

Tonight, when I went to start it, the message on the screen said that the traction control system had a problem, (can't remember exact words)

Car has failed to start and the battery is flat after perhaps 1 minute at most of turning over.
Anybody got any suggestions? My thoughts are that a weak battery can cause all sorts of mayhem and I plan to visit my motor factor to see if the battery is on the way out.

Failing that I was thinking that maybe the glow plugs were not good. Do they throw up a code? No illuminate light as yet, but I have not read the codes yet.

    Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks

...that light is there for a reason you know. Water in fuel and high pressure injection pump are not a good combination.

Hope the pump is not irreversibly damaged by now.

A battery with low volts can cause weird and wonderful warning lights to display spuriously. OP, go with your initial hunch and check the battery and charging system first, and take it from there.

I don't know if the glow plugs will produce a fault codes (I believe it does where the same engine is used in a Fiat), and even so, they may not be EOBD ones and therefore unlikely to appear on a generic scan tool.

This would be my first port of call too.

    Btdt - have the tee-shirt.

Battery and check the alternator - mine needed a rebuild. Low voltages drive the electronics potty.

Can you elaborate on the solution in case someone else had a similar problem?
    Was it the new battery?

New battery did the trick. All symptoms gone.
