    Hi

It's definitely in Superquinn Blanchardstown, near the olive oil if memory serves correct.

Last time I was in my local (Beacon, Sandyford), there wasn't any. This is where I used to buy mine and I hope they haven't stopped stocking it

well if there's a superquinn or supervalu near enough you won't be stuck :)

superquinn have the same stuff dunnes have (or at least, the same stuff the dunnes in carlow has) the cocowel stuff.

I have never seen it with the cooking oils in dunnes. In the beacon I saw it near the eggs, which was near the fresh baked bread & cakes. A sort of healthy section shelf area at the end of a long aisle.

In dunnes cournelscourt it is near chilli sauces and "Asian supermarket stuff", nowhere near cooking oil.

You need to make sure that you get the correct type. Non Hydrogenated. Unrefined.

    Info in link..

I started using it last week. I got this stuff in my local health shop. It's probably more a little more expensive but it is one of the best.

hey I started using this today (just a bit over 1 small tablespoon) I like it..

im wondering how much I should use per day and if I should use it every day or 2nd day etc, or does it matter? since april I started lifting weights properly and lift 3 times a week but lately maybe 2-3 times per week. this is mainly compound lifting. bench press/pull-ups/military press/squats and of course bi-cep and tricep workouts and mix it up every so often.. so im wondering does this help promote muscle building? how much should I use? is 1 or 2 tablespoons ideal? thanks!!

Replacing other vegetable oils with coconut for frying etc I understand but eating coconut oil on its own - why? Do you need the calories?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,744 ✭✭✭kleefarr

From what I have read, the recommended dosage is 3 -5 tablespoons a day. Now that can be either just by eating it or substituting it for other fats, butter, oils, obviously adjusting your quantities taken as just the oil on it's own.

In the health food shop, to make sure its the right stuff. As someone said, unrefined, it should be hard. Start off with one tablespoon and work up to 3 to get your gut used to it. If you're not using it in cooking its best in a smoothie.

Also don't forget people use it for Oil Pulling as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,744 ✭✭✭kleefarr

Yes, when you have a spoonful it turns into liquid in your mouth and then you can swill with it before swallowing.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 23,556 ✭✭✭✭Sir Digby Chicken Caesar

should you really swallow the stuff you've been swilling around your mouth for 5 minutes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,694 ✭✭✭✭Alf Veedersane

If your mouth isn't a cesspit, it should be fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,744 ✭✭✭kleefarr

    Exactly.

How many times do you swallow without even rinsing out your mouth? ;)

Well if your oil pulling for 20 mins like suggested you spit it out and scrap your tongue and dry brush your teeth afterwards.

16 quid a tub  I can't imagine this would be much different than the 6 quid stuff in Dunnes. I mean both are raw, extra virgin, unrefined 100% organic coconut oils. The 16 quid one has a bit more info about the fatty acid make-up but coconuts are coconuts right? They should be very similar if they are raw and unrefined no?

Not sure tbh about that. I must check out the ones in Dunnes (which shelf is it located).
Maybe someone else can offer a correct answer :)

I think the important thing is that it is NOT hydrogenated or refined or semi refined.

"When purchasing a healthy coconut oil, one must determine between "virgin" and "semi-refined." The determining characteristic of Virgin Coconut Oils is that they are made from fresh coconuts, and they have a distinct aroma and taste of coconuts present. Tasteless coconut oils are probably made from copra, not fresh coconuts. There are also some oils that are made from copra that are not fully deodorized and have a taste to them. But these oils are refined also, despite marketing claims. You will be able to taste the difference when comparing with a Virgin Coconut Oil. There are many ways of refining coconut oil made from copra, some more healthy than others. But virgin coconut oils start out with fresh coconuts, and do not need further refining as their natural antioxidant properties make them very stable oils. - See more at: http://www.coconut-oil-uk.com/virgin-coconut-oil-faqs.html#sthash.IBN3lRi8.dpuf"

In my local Dunnes (Swords) it is there along with all the other oils. Now I'm new to coconut oil but I think this stuff is fantastic. Smells delicious, tastes pretty good and is really versatile due to being a solid. I use it for frying most things, baking sometimes and in place of butter for certain things too. Its also for sale in Superquinn (also Swords), same tubs.
