On my 1999 Chorus brakes I've used SwissStop GHP (green) and found them pretty good. Due to changing to wheels with a much shallower braking surface I changed to Koolstop dual compound (these ones, I think though I'm not entirely sure offhand), since they are narrower, and I haven't found them as good. Perhaps the full salmon Koolstops would be better, I've never tried them.

On another bike I have 2010 Record and the brakes on that are substantially better. They are still fitted with the Record pads they came with. I don't know though how much of the difference is due to the pads, and how much is due to the Record being a newer design of lever and caliper. My guess though is that the Record pads are contributing a lot to that better braking. It has been so long since I've had the Swissstops on my other bike that I'm no longer sure how they compare against the Records but I suspect (another guess this) that the Records are at least as good if not better - I wouldn't swear to that though so I'd defer to anyone that has more recent experience with both.

Edit: You'll see it mentioned in the text of the web page above anyway but those SwissStop green pads are for pre 1999 Campag brake shoes. They fit fine on my brakes (bought in 1999 so perhaps a model from a previous year), but they may not suit your brake shoes depending on their vintage. One other negative thing I'd mention about the Koolstop's that I have is that the brake pads is a relatively loose fit in the Koolstop brake shoe, and I find that when I hit the front brake to dismount the bike, any backward movement of the front wheel pulls the pads partly out of the shoes - not a problem as such, as pulling the brakes and pushing the bike forward re-seats them again, but it's just a niggle.

Found these to be the best I have used.
Cheap enough especially if you buy a multi pack.
I will be buying some pads and cartridges in the near future.

    thanks for the advice!

always good to hear from a veritable store of campy-based wisdom!

the stock pads with the athena have been, well, sufficient. i've been curious about the koolstop, since they come well recommended it seems, but i dunno about selecting one type (dry vs wet etc) of pad.

might just stick with the record pads if you think they perform well

I presume it's a replaceable pad that slides into the cartridge.

    those discobrakes look interesting.

do different colours perform differently? and i'm guessing they'll fit into the dual pivot cartridge ok?

    Not sure.
I have just used the red ones and they were brilliant at stopping me in the wet and dry. And I aint no skinny climber.

I find the campagnolo own brand ones work very well. Haven't tried the kool stop ones as I haven't felt to need to change the ones they came with.
