They do this in UK I think it works great. Sometimes if you are not concentrating you miss the smaller speed signs. You are supposed to have your eyes on the road so it makes sense to put the signs there.

Am sure I have already seen these in some areas, mainly 50kph or less. Or did I just imagine it or driving through The North too often.

Although surely the picture above is shopped, as the white sign with a black diaognal means clearway and cars can drive at 60mph.

They can't even keep the "school ahead" and white lines at traffic lights painted near me so not of councils taking on this on. Maybe if the household tax was ring fenced but I doubt it.

Not clear way but "national speed limit apples" which for an unlit single carriageway should be 60mph as you say.

They already do that here. There's a 50kp/h road around the corner from me. It's actually a decent stretch of road, in good nic. They do have one of those on the road that says 50kp/h (a white hectagon shape with a red border I think, and the 50 in black). The problem is that they require upkeep. There are two on that road (one on each side) and both are faded away to nothingness (the white patch is there, but the writing is barely visible).

In general I think they're a good idea though. If I recall correctly, there are no speed signs on that stretch of road though, so the on-the-road sign may well have been instead of a proper sign (instead of in addition to, which is silly).

My reaction also, it has to be said.

They used to here. Then realised it was a great idea and got rid of them all (actually was the miles to kms conversion and never bothered their arses redoing them)

They cant even fill the potholes around here let alone paint lines on a road

Maybe the paint would fill up the potholes though, mix a bit of polyfila in with it :D

Paint can be slippery when wet, which is especially dangerous for bikes. It also wears off.

This is what happens when they try to fill them near me.

Edit: I was more surprised that a pothole was being filled than the council suspending the workers involved tbh.

Then if your not concentrating you suck at driving, if you can't spot a sign post then you shouldn't be driving imho.

Why waste even more government money by painting stuff on roads that will need to be maintained far more then signs on the side of the road just because some people don't pay attention?

....for reasons too long to go into, I had to walk home from work yesterday, which took an hour, on an R road.

Only at that pace do you appreciate.................the birdsong..........the lush vegetation................the warmth of sunglow on a fine evening............

..........do you fúck. What you appreciate is the absolutely appalling amount of litter on the verges...........the complete breakdown of old, worn, bodged and patched road surfaces, the complete disintegration of the asphalt/tar/chips and the edges melting into mush at the verges.

Frankly, there's nothing the paint would stick to imho.

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
