    Hey guys,

My car recently started doing this. It's just at idle. I cleaned the egr valve, and everything was fine until today when this started happening again. I know it was prob never the egr but reckoned it wouldn't hurt to clean it.

    Any thoughts? It's a 2002 BMW 3 series e46 150bhp

What's "this"? Your post doesn't describe the issue..

ok for some reason, the file wont upload. The cars idle is dropping after being rev'ed to maybe 400 rpm nearly cutting out then, going back steady. Ill keep trying to upload the video. I fail at uploading

I had this before, I've got BMW 3 series 318i and had this issue.
Was parked sometimes after driving and RPM was jumping from place to place started with small like yours and then ended up jumping between 500-1000 always and sometimes just slowly cutting out.

Any performance loss when driving? Does fuel consumption seem high?
(I had performance loss a bit and consumption was mad)
Turned out to be mass flow sensor/air mass meter. Ended up paying around 260 euros (as far as I remember).
After that consumption reduced and had no more problems like that.

P.S - I have around the same mileage as you, so maybe that's one of those parts that tends to fail at such high mileage.

Tbh i only have the car about 2 months. I honestly dont feel that there has been a loss of power or mpg. this only started happening abot 2weeks ago. Going to try to clean the MAF and idle control valve. Might have a go at cleaning the MAF this evening when i get home. Il post again when i have that done.

When codes were read off my car it showed that straight away so if you have reader that might be a way.

    Hey
Anyone know what I'm looking for here. Any videos or tutorials I have seen on cleaning the maf are different to my engine. Is this the maf?

The MAF should be between the air filter and the throttle body.

    Maf is circled.

    Thanks,
I tried to unscrew it to take it out and clean it, but couldnt, i removed all the screws i could see to get to it, but it was just so tightly in there. Does anybody know of a tutorial for this? Where the MAF is in the same place as here? In the tutorials i have found its always on the outside of the engine

MAF is very sensitive on these, So cleaning isnt always advised because it can do more damage than good. Can you get a loan of a MAF sensor from a mate ?

I would check the Airflow pipe for splits or not being tightened properly.

have you been messing around with the airbox recently ? If so check you put the pipes back on properly and the jubilee clip is on correct.
If the pipe is split or not on correctly (at the bottom where you cant see) these symptoms can occur.

Also camshaft sensor is another area to check. If youve filled oil recently it can sometimes trickle down to the front of the engine and bug the rear of the camshaft sensor clean the contacts.

It's easier to leave the MAF where it is and remove the pipe it sits in instead.

If you post your location perhaps another local boardsie has a fault reader.

similar happened to my car a couple of years ago, was told the same thing as well -the MAF is very delicate and best to replace it. However the mechanic did actually clean it and it worked -he said himself it was just fortunate that it worked after him cleaning it

When i couldnt get the MAF out, i went down to the pertol station and bought a bottle of REDEX DIESEL (it was half price...bargain) and dumped the whole lot of it into just over a quarter tank of diesel (it wasnt advised, but i didnt realise how much i was pouring in, and then i said might aswell throw the whole lot in)

Got into work this morning and after a few miles it was like this. I dont expect it to last and the idle is still a little bit rough, but the revs arent dropping like they were in the first video...at all. It seems content with being idle.
My impression is that this is a "quick fix" and that once the treatment is gone it will just go back to the same shíte again. Any thoughts? Could it just have been a really dirty injector or something?
