tips for jump rope

    lads,

    Has anyone any tips for learning to jump rope ( skipping )

    I am just useless at it, and regularly see people laughing at how much effort and concentration I have to put into just getting over the rope once.

    Any tips on how I can get started even ?

    In my boxing coaching days, i taught a lot of people how to skip!

    The most common mistake is jumping too high. The rope is only 1 cm thick, yet, people leap 2 feet into the air to jump over it! This makes it impossible to get any speed as all your time is spent in the air.

    An easy(ish) way of getting going is to simply jog on the spot - Left, right, left right and then try to get the rope introduced. As you get better, you can speed it up and lower your feet.

    set a target - 20, 30, 40 revolutions. Everyone will get caught up in the rope, the main thing is to keep the skipping motion going and get the rope back going.

    Find somewhere that's out of view, but where you have lots of space to swing the rope, and start practising.

    thanks lads,

    just spent 20 mins at it there.
    I started by jogging with the rope in one hand to one side.
    Seemed to get the rhythm fairly quickly.
    Went to try with both hands and actually clear the rope - disaster.
    It is totally not like me to have such poor coordination I just seem to have a mental block with it.

    The best I could manage was 4 !

    a decent speedrope will make it much easier (if you don't already have one).
    Also make sure it's the right length for you. Then just practice really. I think it's also easier with a mirror so you can see what you're doing.

    best way to do it is relax (or do what my husband did and make it a competition if you are that way motivated)

    its all about getting used to the skill, i've been doing it since i was 4, so im well used to it, and i couldn't understand how my husband struggled with it.



    start with a handle in each hand and the rope behind you (so you see it coming)

    when it hits your vision (depending on length) thats when you jump, or
    what we did was move your feet like you are jogging on the spot,

    try and keep the handles in each hand going on the same rotation. as in both hands being up at the same time and both hands being down at the same time.

    also if you could buy one and practice at home where no-one is watching it might help.

    Also, if the rope is the correct length for your height, you should just be rotating your wrists to swing the rope - no need to swing your arms and waste energy

    I cannot skip a lick, even since i was a kid.

    I got one of those ropeless deals for a tenner and it works grand. I skip on a regular basis now. I highly doubt that it has affect my coordination or ability to skip for the better. but I get the same warm up. I should 'take the training wheels off' and get one with a rope now.

    But i have low ceilings in my house so its good for that anyway. When the sun comes up I might try with a rope one outside, if its not too advanced for me.

    that is brilliant !

    That's defo for the home though.

    If I haven't mastered normal skipping in 3 weeks I will buy one of these and video myself using it.

    Bit of motivation for me !

    Yes defo for the home behind a locked door, Im not sure if I would rather someone see me fail at skipping with a rope or use one of those things.

    Em, no you don't.

    That's a shake weight for skipping.

    Part of the reason people use a jump rope is to train the ability to keep doing things that require coordination when you start to get tired. That's why you see people switching things up, changing feet, doing double swings, and stuff like that.

    If you're just jumping up and down you don't need to use the electronic doohickeys.

    I know its not doing anything for coordination. Its a nice 3 minute warm up. before some bodyweight exercises.

    Thanks lads.
    Went to the gym specifically to practice skipping today.
    Did about 20 mins and managed to get up to 14 which I think is a pretty massive improvement on anything I have done previously.

    I did figure out I need to wear more support though :o - it got kinda painful
