I could never see myself travelling in that plane, way to scary.

Do the hostesses remind you to wear knickers at check in?

Look at the date...Do people never learn?

Plus, why not just put a camera on the bottom of the plane and people could watch it on their screens if they wished!

If you tried to book a flight on this plane you would be a sap alright.

Admittedly, I am no aeronautic engineer but can someone prove without a doubt how this could never work?

So long as the materials used had the correct properties it would work but as far as I know any transparent material would be too heavy and not suitable for use as an aircraft skin (and possibly stupidly expensive). There's also a heap of wiring and control stuff buried beneath the floor so all that'd need to be transparent too. Oh, and transparent baggage.

They're planning on doing that for the x-54 (I think that's the name but not sure), a supersonic commercial aircraft that won't have any windows as far as I recall.

It wouldn't need to be the whole floor though. Just a narrow strip would be enough. Then there's the idea proposed by a user below the blog post who claims that it's possible to create the feel of a glass bottom experience by having monitors on the floor under a clear floor. ''The space seen under the plane projected to it via multiple camera lens fixed underneath.''
He adds that the American military uses such for stealth. It is the cost that is prohibitive, but hey they are taking citizens into space so really is it not just a matter of deciding what will be most appealing to the consumer?

Well there is concept aircraft with transparent fuselages:

I cant see commercial aircraft design changing much over the next 40 years, simply cramming as much people in for as cheaply as possible is what airline management want.

Ah, a supersonic Vomit Comet. That'll be popular.

No stops in Heathrow to refuel, see the sights.

Rather than monitors they could possibly stream it to everyone's tablet device (or Google Goggles or whatever will exist then) that way they don't have the extra weight and people can still see out.

Thinking about it now that'd be pretty cool if Google's Goggles could manage that, a completely transparent hull.

I was referring to the fact that it's an April Fools joke.

Ah forget it, it's not funny when I have to explain it.

Surely that would in breach of some health and safety laws? You can't have your windows blind pulled down during take off or landing due for emergency reasons!

Several airlines already feature a nose mounted camera, affording passengers the opportunity to view take-off and landing.

Iberia have cameras mounted on the vertical stabliser on the rear of the plane. They cut the feed just as the plane comes in though so you don't see the vital few seconds of touch-down.

No idea. They do specify that the blinds remain open so that you're not blinded on the way out during a bright day in an emergency or in case the internal lighting fails. I guess they'd have to have safety measures in place such as backup batteries on each light fixture were such a plane to be produced. Having the internal light level match the external light level should be easy enough so temporary blindness when exiting shouldn't be an issue.
