    Hey,

I'm in Derry and have a Spanish friend here, she asked about travelling around Ireland for a while camping.

It will be a low budget trip but we will be getting buses when needed and also staying in hostels, but the main thing is trying to camp around and I wanted to know if people still hitch hike.

I have had a lot of people that stayed with me from couch surfing and some of them did hitch, I just haven't done it in yearssss from Donegal to Derry.

Any advise would be great :)

Youd have too much gear to be carrying around hitching no? People still hitch, although its rarer than it used to be for obvious reasons. Id usually stop, but only for females (Im female and would usually be driving on my own).

Always discreetly write down the licence plate before you get into the vehicle. That way, when you wake up in a bath of ice with a kidney missing, you can get to work right away tracking it down.

Camping, in this glorious Irish weather? OP, is your friend a bit touched in the head?

It might be an idea to bring a light rain jacket incase the heavens open. http://img.nauticexpo.com/images_ne/photo-g/professional-survival-suit-36464-3306391.jpg

I hitch every now and then and have never had any problems RE being raped and murdered to any noticable degree. If you're carrying a lot of camping gear and such you might find it harder to get a lift and even at the best of times you could be waiting a long while to get anywhere.

People in the West our great for it! I was doing a Scouting Ireland challenge 3 years ago and I was offered many lifts without trying to, The challenge also made us find places to stay (usually someones garden). There was two of us (male) with rucksacks and tents (and a little bit smelly). We got accomadation with ease most times (3-4 time lucky) and got offered atleast 1 lift every day (without trying) Sadly as part of the challenge we weren't allowed take lifts!

    Enjoy your hitch hike!
