    Im planning on going visiting friends on a j1 for 3 weeks in the summer, do i need to apply for any visa for my holiday?

    Iirc you just fill in the paperwork they give you on the plane. No applying for visas ahead of time

    You need to complete the ESTA process and be approved prior to travelling. For most Irish people it's a formality.

    That changed a few years a go. You need to pre-authorise via ESTA now.

    leeroybrown is correct....you now fill out the ESTA online before travelling (the fee is around $14)....and for 99.99% of irish travellers, that is all......the .01% would be those with previous overstays in the US, or a criminal record in either ireland or the US or any other situation that would lead homeland security to look at you more closely.
