Booked flights online- made a big mistake

Someone I know booked flights using American Airlines from Dublin to Orlando via London. Unfortunately they have just noticed that the return route is not the same as the outward route. Basically going out it is Dublin- Gatwick-Orlando and the return journey is Orlando - Gatwick-Heathrow- Dublin with only 3 hours to make the connection. This was all booked as a single transaction with AA and admittedly they should have noticed the different London airport but didn't. It seems strange that the AA search engine took this route despite the fact there are plenty of flights leaving from Gatwick to Dublin on the day in question. AA are being VERY unaccommodating about changing the flights, they want at least €200 per person to swap them onto Gatwick flight and will not transfer their baggage either. Has anyone else experienced this dilemma or have any idea what their options are. I know they pressed the confirm button but it seems a bit unreasonable of AA

There's a direct bus between the two, takes about an hour and a quarter.

Your friend pressed confirm and agreed to the flights. Basically what they want to do now is a change of mine and AA are willing to accomdate that at a charge. I took a look at the AA website and to be fair to them they have a link next to the flight you select giving the details. Your friend did not click on this so it is their fault not the aa. It doesn't matter about other connections available it was your friends mistake no one elses.

Can you not cancel it altogether an get a full refund?
Is there not a cooling off period?
    Then book it again.
    I don't know, just a thought!

A lot of airlines have a 24 hour cancellation policy but don't advertise it well. Not sure if AA is one. Otherwise, they'll just have to suck it up and do the transfer.

Thanks for all the replies folks, the flights were booked 2 weeks ago so I reckon the cooling off period has expired. She asked about a refund but was told that the booking was non-refundable. So I guess it's a case of taking the bus and putting it down to experience. Feel sorry for her as she was doing this as a surprise for someone.
