Copy of passport???

I was buying clothes from Surfstitch online recently and they asked for photo ID to verify my identity. I thought it was strange, but I sent them a photo of my drivers license. They processed that order and all was ok.
When I placed another order this week, they are now looking for a photo of my passport along with the drivers license they have already. I said no to this request and told them to cancel the order.
Has anyone been asked for a picture of their passport for online purchases before? Was I right not to send it?

I gave my ID to Misco as they asked for it. I used to work for a hotel company and we had 6 buildings in London and we asked for ID on all online bookings.

The shop must be screwed fraud wise. Or, have totally over reacted/ misred the warnings on the chargeback paperwork.

I went to buy a PC monitor from them and I got an email saying that they require a copy of my passport or something..........

    Are this croud a scam?

Is it not very dangerous these days to send copies of sensitive docs like that to strangers?

    Another thing.........

I placed my order using my visa card details and then got a message stating that I had not actually purchased anything and that they needed to check their price is correct etc.

I used to work in a Music store. We once had a guy in on work experience who put a €300 price tag on a €800 guitar. WE HAD TO SELL THE CUSTOMER THE GUITAR AT THE MARKED PRICE even though it was incorrect. The boss explained that that was the law. Our loss customer's gain.

So how is it that this company can send me an email like this, ??

Should I cancel the order, are they fraudulent????

Put simply, under Irish law anyway, your boss was wrong, a price sticker is just an invitation to treat, not contractually binding.

Hi, that is a good one.

The boss must just have decided it was the right thing to do in this case.

A lot of companies do honour the price alright, just depends on the situation.

Apparently they are a decent company. Although you mentioned buying a pc monitor, are you sure you are talking about the same company as OP.

They seem to sell lots of electronics
    checkout misco.ie

I have never been asked for ID as well as my usual VISA info dealing with ANY company before and I have done business with quite a few big and small. Its a first for me to be asked for a copy of Passport, the other was acopy of TV licence....

Just seems like the kind of thing one would be asked for when signing up to a billing contract with a phone service provider or such!!!

I think I will refuse. Read somewhere online that they have moved their headquarters to eastern Europe somewhere. The post reckoned data security wouldn't be so tight over there.

I will tell them I will send a copy of a recent phone bill with my address etc instead on Monday. Will phone them too to state that.

The customer commnitted a criminal offence - theft by deception.

I had someone do that many years ago in a store I owned in Liffey Valley - they had done it before, so I kept a close eye on the cctv in the office. Once they had got to the counter it scanned in at the right price, she insisted on the incorrect price as per the sticker she had added, we put it though and once she stepped out of the shop, we hauled her in and she was arrested and charged and when it went to court, she got £200 fine (yep - pre euro days) and criminal convction.

As for online companies asking for photo id - quite normal for continental european companies - I don't see the issue. Many hotels in Europe/USA will take a copy of your passport when you arrive, all banks will keep copies - Its an ID item - in a way that's one of the uses ofr it - proving who you are. The Irish mentality of not wanting to give a copy of iD or pps number is ridiculous, fueled by an uneducated / hysteria building media.

I keep an image of y passport on my PC and phone and send it whenever requested by a company - 20+ years later and never an issue.

What good is your picture if it is an online transaction.

Only time i was asked for ID was copy of card itself. Different site to OP.

That is misleadingly incorrect, with no possible way for you to argue your position. Based on the provided information "the customer" did not switch price tags like in your story, a shop employee (work experience) mispriced an item, "the customer" wanted to buy the item at the displayed price, the boss sold at that price to "the customer". No "theft by deception" occurred.

Is it ok to resurrect this thread? I ordered an APC ups from Misco recently, I have an account with them having ordered various bits and pieces from them over the years so they've dealt with me before. I got an email from them this evening looking for a copy of either my passport or drivers licence. I'm very reluctant to give it to them tbh and I replied to the email stating this. Has anyone else here come across this with Misco before?
