We aretrying to get Saorview/ Freeview together from one box, box on Amazon claims to do this. Spec is MPEG2 / MP4.model is DVB-T-DTR-5104M.We have aerial in loft.

We have old Sony TV analogue that worked ok before switchover getting RTE and UK channels. We are in Malin Head facing Ballyliffin.

Should we buy new TV? if so buy in North or South ? We were thinking of cheap offering from Argos Alba seems good inch at £249-freeview already in would this work with the Amazon box ? or should we keep old Sony ?

    Any help welcome,thanks

Any Saorview approved TV or STB will allow you to receive both the Saorview channels and the SD Freeview channels at a minimum, as the Saorview DVB-T/MPEG-4 standard is backwards compatible with the older Freeview DVB-T/MPEG-2 standard.

If you also want to receive the FreeviewHD channels BBC1/2, UTV HD and Ch.4 HD you will require a TV or STB with a DVB-T2 tuner.

I'm not sure if any of the Saorview approved STBs come with this tuner but many of the Saorview approved TVs have it as standard e.g. most of the Sony range.

Alba specialise in making godawful shyte gear. If you have £249 to spend try LG instead, their inbuilt software can handle Saorview and Freeview together without crashing.

Alba doesn't make anything, it's just one of the Argos in-house brands, like Bush.

Could be used on anything from anywhere.

Also, I've never come across a tv that "crashes" when presented with Freeview & Saorview signals.

Thanks to you for your replies, think we will try box on old tv-cheapest option if works ok great if not will look at new tv.

As you can tell we are novices on a learning curve, great to get help online.

One of the cheapest approved receivers around at the moment is this one from Argos at €50

All are made by Vestel in Turkey that are Argos brands of Bush and Alba. :)

It is good for areas with no Freeview overspill which receive Saorview only and other rooms in a house. :)

You must work in Argos product sourcing?

Give your reason why it's only "good for areas with no Freeview overspill". Presumably because it doesn't do Freeview HD?

OP here seems to be after a cheap upgrade for an old tv, so Freeview HD is pretty much an irrelevance. Would be different if they were buying a PVR that could still be useful later on when they get an actual HD tv.

No, Ronnie, I wouldn't work for that crowd, HD will be needed for futureproofing, even an old CRT TV shows a big improvement in the picture quality over the standard lower resolution stations with a good quality scart cable which is properly shielded. All of the newly developed boxes have and will have T2 tuners so future stations will more than likely be upgraded to T2 in the near future. :)

Future stations? Are you referring to the "interim" Freeview HD service that's being touted atm, in the 600 MHz band? Or new Saorview services?

What would you regard as "the near future"?
