    1. The North attacks the South.
    2. America says "Quit it!"
    3. UN says "Hey! That's wrong!"
    4. America says "I mean it!"
    5. China says "Or what?!"
    6. America nukes the North.
    7. China responds "LOL".
    8. North and South unite.
    9. Everyone lives happily ever after.

Except the dead. They remain dead.

A mate has been following this incredibly closely and I often get random 4am updates.
It's really not looking good, that young dictator has a serious chip on his shoulder and really isn't going to back down from anyone.

The largest military force on the planet in the hands of a bunch of absolute nutjobs.

    I care.

They've always been at war though. The Korean War never really ended rather its been in stasis for 60 years.

Its worrying though if things do escalate into conflict.

They may not live but you can't say they're not happy.

Anyway, as above, haven't they been in a state of war for 60-odd years? Hopefully it's just poor media translation as usual.

There had been a ceasefire but this was made invalid on March 11th.

No, the NK military personnel total over 9 million.

Unless you live in South Korea there really isn't much to worry about.

    These things can spiral.

I'm certainly no tin foil hat wearing worrier, but I'd rather they didn't start shooting at each other at any point.

    Yes, universal conscription for men.

Yes, there is conscription. In terms of troop numbers they are the largest in the world.

Their budget though is obviously pitiful in comparison.

    According to that, 1106000 active + 8200000 reservists = over 9 million?

    Reserves aren't a standing military.

Crazy that 9 million. I still can't see them doing anything the whole world is against them

Off topic, didn't realise Vietnam have the second biggest army force in the world

North Korea, a rogue country. It is now entering a stage where it is reacting to the sanctions, much like a country being starved of reason, as they think they have. At this point in time, they feel that they are "untouchable". All neighbouring states and associates are regarded as indecisive. Now? all it will take is for North Korea to launch just one missile, regardless of its destructive force, to be launched.

Should this happen, ladies and gentlemen, we are looking at a war that humanity has never seen. An age where long range missile's will result in the first experience of the last 100 years, see not the death of frontline soldiers, but the death of many thousands...

The NK have at least 1.5 - 2 million soldiers at the border at all times. That, in itself, is a fairly huge number for one section.

China's reaction will be very telling if NK launch an assault

Accordingly every year the United States and South Korea have war-games and each year North Korea makes a stink about it.

Of course, in recent times North Korea has been sabre rattling. The big issue, as I see it, is that if NK keeps waving their dicks around there will be a put up or shut up moment and thats where the dangers lie.

According to a close Sth Korean friend of mine, the war has never ended and they were in "break time". Basically they just stopped for some holiday or something and never got going. The war was never resolved.

Conscription is in effect in North and South. North has more numbers, South has better technology.

On their own, the South should win, but if China joins in behind North, then it could go the distance. The Russia situation will be interesting too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,752 ✭✭✭pablomakaveli

Their massive numbers seem intimidating but would they have enough weapons to arm all of them?

Cant see the chinese getting involved unless SK/USA strike first.

If North Korea do anything that might invite a military response from a major nation they'll find themselves very much alone.

No country in the world is going to risk a large scale war with nuclear potential for the sake of North Korea.

They still have to get their troops across the minefields in the DMZ, they won't last long hiding behing their artillery lines. Still - I wouldn't want to be on guard duty at the bridge of no return today.

I care for one and so do many others. The world is in a precarious position at the moment if you haven't noticed. Wars going on, economic upheaval etc. The last thing it needs is another clusterfcuk war with one of the biggest armies on the planet all willing to sacrifice themselves for their maniac of a leader. The fall out from this and knock on effects will have implications for us all.

What makes it interesting now is a new leader is in place in NK with an increase in anti-american rhetoric therefore making it different from threats in years gone by.

What I'd like to see next:

    1. China says "we're having no part of this".
    2. North Korea doesn't give a **** and ploughs on.
    3. Swift defeat of Best Korea.
    4. Reunification of Korea.

This. After about forty minutes of war NK will be chucking rocks across the border at the South.

I have seen brave heart and no one volunteer is better than a hundred conscripted people . 9 million is only a number

China won't back them, not in a war situation. China doesn't need them, they got their own plan for world domination going to sweetly to get involved in a border dispute. (as they see it)

Im not a fan of US imperialism but I hope they get rid of this appalling regime in North korea once and for all. Ive watched a few documentaries on NK and your jaw would drop the way they treat their own people. It's like Stalinist Russia from the 30's

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,476 ✭✭✭Riddle101

As bad as this sounds, i'm sure the US is loving this. Just what the military industrial complex wants.

The Chinese and Russian's wouldn't get involved, and why would they?

South Korea are armed with far better weapons plus have the Japanese and Americans behind them. While the DPRK could cause large numbers of casualties in Seoul, and other cities in rocket range, there would be no large scale war.

Their people are brainwashed to the max. They fund a ridiculously large army while many citizens starve and live in complete poverty. The level of support their leader gets, makes absolutely no sense.

Sure most of the population is starving or locked up in re-education camps,
As much as there supposedly super big army can't see any conflict lasting, you can guarantee all that artillery anti aircraft would be neutralised fairly quick ,
That much artillery is such close proximity is a disaster zone ,one explosion could in theory wipe out the lot in one go
