    Hi
my girlfriends new laptop has Windows 8.
It seems to be set to Internet via BING. She cannot open Internet Explorer.- it says "page cannot be displayed "
    1) Can it be reset to Internet Explorer - if so how, ?

    2) she would also like to be able to setup "Favourites" on left hand side was it is in Windows 7 - Can this be done - if yes - How ?

    3) She also received an email which had a legitimate "PDF" file attachment - but this wouldn't open - would you know the reason why or how to open it?

    4) Some attachments only show the option "save to computer" - but not open directly from email - any suggestions also ?

    Thank you

1 & 2. Not exactly sure how you mean internet via Bing but there are two separate apps, Internet Explorer and Bing. Click the Internet Explorer app on the main screen for regular browsing. Bing is more of a search engine. This will open IE and favourites can be viewed by clicking on the star in the top right.

    3. Download a PDF reader from the App Store to view PDFs.

    4. If the program needed to open a document has not been installed then you will only be able to save it and not open it. Install the correct program to open/view/amend files. If you dont have Office installed you wont be able to open a Word or Excel file.

    1) Hold Win+W to pull up Settings Search. Look for "Default Programs"

    2) I didn't even know this was a feature in 7, so you've got one up on me. Try "unlocking" the taskbars within IE

    3) The baked in Reader App should be handling a PDF properly. Double check default program settings

    4) Depends on what she's viewing mail from. The baked in Mail app is receiving a big update in the next few days.

She can also try to Refresh Windows. New feature to 8:

-Your files and personalization settings wont change
-Your PC settings will be changed back to their defaults
-Windows Store Apps will be kept
-Software you installed otherwise (eg. Desktop Software, etc) will be removed. Including Office, Firefox, etc
-A list of software that was removed will be saved to your dekstop

To access this option: Win+Q "System Refresh"

I'm assuming that the OP is referring to the Favourites bar being on the left in IE8 but on the right in IE10 (and IE9). Not sure if it can be changed back.

I recommend downloading a start menu app for Windows 8, FIGHT THE POWER!*

*The power being: no flippin' start button. :)
