Shotgun microphone for a DSLR.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a microphone for a DSLR?

Shooting video in the wind and getting mainly wind noises has me considering getting a hot-shoe mounted shotgun mic.

It'd be used for recording machinery working, which are fairly loud. No need for beautiful quality sound, just enough to keep to wind at bay :)

Preferably under the €40 mark, so what do you think? Would I be better off somehow guarding the cameras built in mic from the wind...?

I was considering the same. I plan to shoot a bit of video soon.

Through research and asking around, the Rode VideoMix Pro came as the highest recommended. A good bit more than your price range though.

Same here, from the little bit of searching I've done Rode seem to be the high end of the market.

The amount of use I have for a microphone doesn't really justify going over €50 or €60 tops, but the things I've been hearing about Rode would tempt me to go that bit further with my wallet :o

If you don't need high quality sound (which you can't get from a DSLR anyway) but are happy with the quality from the DSLR then get a cheap mic like this - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ex-Pro%C2%AE-Professional-Directional-Microphone-Cameras/dp/B006DD44D2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1364624064&sr=8-1 and get a windsock/dead cat like this one - http://www.amazon.co.uk/RODE-Deadkitten-Windshield-Microphone-VideoMics/dp/B0017JHU10/ref=sr_1_8?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1364624272&sr=1-8 for it as the one on it isn't the best.

Spend a bit extra and get a second-hand Zoom h1/h2, or Rode Video Mic is my advice. They're well made, sound excellent, and the Zooms are very versitile.

Either way, even if you spent 2 grand on a mic, it will sound terrible in a windy setting without a dead cat of some sort.

I have a sennheiser mke 400, I think it's available slightly cheaper then the Rhode. I think the Rhode is definitely the best but as has been said you will want a wind kit.
