I joined the STAP scheme and at the first meeting the local mart manager was there. He was making the point about how buyers buying store lambs and how they would prefer weather lambs to rams. i was wondering do many castrate any more. We havent done so in years. we used to with the burdizzo around the end of may. I was going to do a bunch just to compare performance, sale value but i was going to ring them. when is the best time to ring them?

afaik you are legally supposed to ring lambs for tails or bag before 1 week old. find doing their bags very fiddly to make sure their stones are both below the ring. we castrate all ram lambs that are around the beginning of august.not supposed to do them by the rules of qa but do it anyway. wethers always make a premium in our local mart especially for fat lambs as there are a couple of wholesaler butchers buying there
