    Car failed its NCT 3 weeks ago just on tracking so got that sorted today as the repeat test is tomorrow. This week though the exhaust has been acting up and has a hole in the middle pipe and sounds like a souped up car now. Is there any point going ahead with the retest tomorrow or will they just retest the tracking? I can't even disguise the noise the garage tried using a paste to cover it but won't hold.

    Since you're being retested within 30 days they can only test the items they failed the previous time, they can't fail you on items which passed unless they're obviously dangerous. Testing after the 30 days would be a full test again.

    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/2009/en/si/0567.html
    (3) Subject to paragraph (4), in carrying out a re-test on a vehicle only those reasons in respect of items which gave rise to the refusal of the test certificate shall be tested.

    (4) Where in the course of a test or a re-test, the issuing authority forms the opinion that a defect, notwithstanding that it is not specified as a reason for refusal mentioned in Schedule 3 or, in the case of a re-test was not specified in the test report, is such that the use of the vehicle in question would be a danger to the public, that defect shall be a reason for the refusal of a test certificate.
    “re-test” means a subsequent test carried out on a vehicle under these Regulations, subsequent to the refusal of a test certificate in respect of that vehicle, where—
    (a) the application for the re-test is made not more than 21 days after the day on which the test certificate was refused, and
    (b) the test is carried out on a day which is not more than 30 days after the day on which a test certificate in respect of the vehicle was refused;

    As far as I know they can only check the things it failed on originally, but I'm open to correction on this.

    Ok great. I'm getting the exhaust done next week just didn't want to waste €22 on the retest if they were going to fail it on the exhaust. Cheers

    If your any good with tools, a tin can, and two large jubblie clips should be able to cover the hole on the middle of your exhaust.

    Slice can in half, top to bottom, after cutting off the top and bottom.
    Wrap it around the exhaust, covering the hole.

    Tighten the clips at either end over the can/exhaust.

    Its a bit of a Mc Gyver job, should keep the noise down till you can sort it properly.

    Yeah i think you're right. The paste was still drying when i collected it. It sounded awful at 5.30pm but a bit better now.;) It's been a great car in fairness over the last 3 years and is old (99) so i can't complain too much as it's a rust thing now with the exhaust which is fair enough.

    Will let yas know how the NCT goes tomorrow!
