Hi everyone. I'm new to this forum. And new to gardening. I got a guy in to plant trees and a wind break area. It has cost alot an dim am just wondering what to do with th eground between tres and planting as there is a lot of space. I will try and upload a picture later. I was told to use mulch but is this expensive. I would need a couple of loads. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

You can mulch trees with grass clippings.
Which isn't of any help to you now, as there is as yet no grass to be clipped. :o

You could try an artificial mulch such as a weed-proof fabric like Mypex. Leave it down for 2-3 years until your new trees are established. I'd advice purchasing it from a builders providers rather than a garden centre, as it should cost less there.

Now that I think of it, they had some in Lidl recently and I think it was reasonably priced.

    A 1.5 x 50 meter roll of Mypex is around 55 euro.

Couldn't make out those trees you had planted, but if they are spread all over that area in photo, for a cheap cheerful start to the garden sow grass over all, and around each tree or groups of trees Kill/spray off Grass/weeds and cover with a Mypex and Woodchip Mulch, 2 to 3 feet around each tree will be a good start and adds Distance/protection from the Lawnmower grass cutting machines.
And in the years to come as trees develop/grow you can make "Island beds" inter/under plant with lower ground cover colourful Shrubs

That would be a complete waste of money you may as well leav € 50.00 notes around the trees. How do you think mulch will not be disturbed in such an open site?

Are there trees in the photo? What size are they? If there small girths, cut out a disc approx 1 m in diameter and place around each tree. Use old carpet remants/lino. You can always peg them in position with wire coat hangers, or a few rocks etc

If they are small trees, I hope you've fitted rabbit guards.

Sonnenblumen is right, site is too large and exposed for mulch, and keeping large sheets of mypex down would be almost impossible. That is intended for much smaller purposes, suburban or city gardens.

I can't see the trees at all in the photo. Are they staked and rabbit-proofed? If not you will lose them to wind and bunnies faster than to weeds or grass.

The trees were not planted in that photo but are planted in the last few days. We have considered the Bunnies and Deer here as our neghbours had problems especially with the bunnies!
The trees are staked also but will have to put down the rabbit guards...
I will upload a photo of the rees later today.
So from what i am reading here is lawn seed the area and keep the area around each tree free from grass?
