sanding semi solid wood floors - rough surface

We have semi-solid woodfloors, they've just been sanded and varnished 3 times.

The floor guy told me that we could only sand semi-solid floors once as they are only so thick.

The wood is much rougher than it was originally before we did the job and there was no sanding done in between the coats of varnish.

So the wood finish has a very rough texture.

Is this typical when sanding and varnishing semi-solid wood floors?

Could I possibly do a light sand myself and put a 4th coat of varnish on or because its only semi-solid I'd ruin the floor? Or should I get the guy to come back?

    Thanks

I sanded my own wooden floor a while back, and to be honest it was only rough after the initial sand, using the rough paper. When I used the varying degrees of finer sanding paper, it lefgt it very smooth.

Are you sure the guy who did yours didn't only do a rough sand, and forgot about doing the fine ones?

I think he only did a rough sand and then 3 coats if varnish. He said he couldn't do another sanding as the floors are only semi-solid and the wood is only so thick. But my suspicion is that he just didn't bother doing a light sand and so the floors are now rough.

Are your floors solid wood or semisolid?

Your floor guy is full of ****.
You should get him back to finish the job. No "floor guy" should leave a floor rougher than before he started.
Another sanding wont ruin the floor, if you can sand something once, you can sand it twice.
    Was he expensive?

    Mine are real wood.

I'm no expert, but surely a fine sanding would take off very little surface.

i know a floor sanding guy and from what i learned from him, this sounds odd.

Its true about the semi solid floor though, not sure about sanding it only once but there is a limit.

You can sand solid wood floors more cos they are solid wood (obvious I know).

Whereas semi-solid would have a thinner piece of solid wood on top of a base, so could not be sanded back as much, as you will run out of real wood to sand, and hit the base material.

The first rough sanding removes original finish, you then apply 1st coat you let this dry and then reapply a 2nd coat you give this a sanding with 100 grit dust off and reapply varnish let this dry and sand with 120 gri, reapply varnish let dry and sand with 180 grit and above....after the 1st sand your just rubbing down the varnish TBH your man is full of **** u could get your self some 240 grit rub down the floor and give it another coat it be like a babies bottom then

Thanks for all the replies; very helpful.

So we decided we'd call the guy back next week. BUT meanwhile we've had a radiator leak all over the floor. We got the water up pretty quick, but some of the grooves are darker now and seem to be splitting a bit from the leak. Not sure we can call him back now. >:-(
