Laying New Sleeper Beams

    Bought a few of these 2.4m x 200mm x 100mm.

Want to use these to make a raised bed against a wall.

Any advice on best way to set these up? I was thinking of digging a small trench and levelling it, then sitting them in on the 100m side, so I have 200mm of height.

Should the underneath be concreted or is that overkill?

    Also, should I line these?

    All help and comments welcomed

2 or 3 pressure treated 3 x 2 or 3 x 3 inch wooden stakes and some 100-110mm long decking screws will do he job nicely for each length of sleeper.

Lay the base sleepers on a thin level layer of sharp sand and you are good to go.

Hammer in the PT stakes behind the base sleeper.

Use a cordless screwgun/drill and pre drill the stakes and sleepers with a 4mm wood drill bit just before screwing into them...this prevents the decking screw from possibly splitting the stake and back of the sleeper.

Then screw your decking screws into the stakes and on into the backs of the sleepers with your cordless screwgun and pozi-bit

Repeat this process as you install each row of sleepers to the desired height of the raised bed.

    Simples.:)

Sounds like the right way to do it and get them level. Good on ye.

They're very thick at 100mm. If there was any way you could get them split to four 25mm planks or two 50mm planks, go for it. I know this is unlikely, but you'd make a huge saving.

The other disadvantage of the thickness is that you're losing space. A raised bed should have an overall width of no more that 1.5m. Using these sleepers as is will give you a maximum soil width of 1.3m. (Maybe space isn't an issue for you).

It would be worthwhile to put down a sheet of Mypex or weed-proof membrane to prevent any weeds from the ground growing up thru' your raised bed.

200mm is a nice height. You could be some nice carrots growing in a bed like that, plenty of depth there.

Don't concrete it. You'll need some permeable surface so that water can soak away easily.

One obvious thing you'll need to do. Fill it with growing medium, ie compost, topsoil, etc. You'll need a lot of this. If you're taking the soil from your own garden you should give it a good riddle to remove stones and larger clumps.
